The drills can also upbraid the surface or rock if scientists want to use the rover's instruments to have a closer look at the details. Much like Curiosity, Mars 2020's rover will use a sky crane landing system. In order to land the rover gently on its wheels, a parachute slows the descent of the vehicle after entering the atmosphere and the heat shield separates. Rockets slow down the descent until it is safe enough for the sky crane attached to the rover to lower it on an "umbilical cord" of sorts. Sensors tell the sky crane when the rover has safely touched down, which cuts the cord and powers the crane to crash land far away from the path of the rover. Then, it's ready to rove. But where to land? Scientists have narrowed it down to eight possible landing sites. They want it to be able to land safely on a flatter surface that is surrounded by rocky terrain with the signs of habitability they want to study. Over the next couple of years, they hope to determine the final landing site.

Once you have the outrigger in the correct position, and the bolt in place, weld the flange to the frame, all the way around. Finally, weld the end of the angle bracket back into place. I ignored the extra width added by the frame patch, and so my Rover is now fully 1/8 inch wider than it was before. It would be 1/4 inch wider if I'd needed two frame patches. If you're picky or a perfectionist, there are alternatives to this forced re-sizing: You could work harder to make a flush frame patch, or you could just use the replacement outrigger without a patch. Both would leave your Rover at its original dimensions, but the repair would be weaker. Here's the finished product, a brand new outrigger and reinforced frame where before there was a rusty mess. Now is the time to use a wire wheel to clean up the welds and then spray the heck out of everything with rust-proof primer and then rubberized underseal. Again, some kind of corrosion inhibitor inside the frame is a good idea.

Drive the car and listen for tell tale noises such as the knocks and clunks of transmission wear. Use the car in an off road situation and engage low range and make sure it works well and stays in range, and stays in each gear especially in deceleration. Check the vacuum operated differential lock function is working correctly (if fitted). Drive line backlash is more common on the pre-1986 Range Rovers. The earlier models prior to the fitting of the Borg Warner chain-driven transfer box tended to suffer from uneven distribution of torque to the axles which can result in axle breakage. The Borg Warner chain-driven transfer box provided a more even distribution of torque to eliminate that issue. The five speed gearbox model prior to 1989 is prone to problems with the fifth gear. To check first wind up the car鈥檚 windows to eliminate distracting noises. Then put the transfer into neutral and shift through each gear, if the whine of the gears becomes a growl in fifth it means a gearbox overhaul will be needed. The 1989 and later five speed gearbox is not prone to this problem. Pulling under brakes typically indicates a failed hub seal.

Thanks everyone for the additional feedback. I really appreciate it. The only reason I even thought about a Mazda is because the CX-5 seemed like the next best thing when the RAV4 and CR-V didn't work out. This is when I seriously thought I should get a CUV because there's no doubt it would come in handy, and I liked sitting up higher when I drove the RAV4. But I'm concerned about Mazda's long-term reliability and longevity because I keep my cars for 20 plus years. Even though Scotty Kilmer was more positive in his recent video, he also said he likes to wait many years before he makes a final assessment. So I decided that it would be best to accept that I should get another sedan, which has worked out fine for me up to this point in life. Because of it's history of reliability, there was no question that I'd get a Camry if I didn't get a CUV. BTW- a girl parked next to me at the store recently. I thought her car looked sharp and asked what she was driving. It was a Mazda 6. She said she likes it, but it's a gas guzzler.
