Overland Expedition & Adventure Travel : Expedition Land Rovers Through The Generations

Overland Expedition & Adventure Travel : Expedition Land Rovers Through The Generations

What is it about the image of a dusty Land Rover parked on the rolling savanna of Africa? Is it the thought of exploration, freedom, and adventure? In this blog, I link to a few Land Rover expeditions that have been used through the generations. Since the very first Land Rover rolled off the production line, these vehicles have been used on expeditions across the world. Here's a quick reference of overland trips which have used the Land Rover as the vehicle of choice throughout the Land Rover Generations. I have not included any of the new generation Land Rovers, namely, the Range Rover, Discovery and Freelander. This blog focuses on the original design and the various modifications that have enabled the vehicle to be the perfect choice for a vehicle based expedition. George Adamson drove from the UK back to Kenya as part of his honeymoon with Joy. His book, Bwana Game, tells the short story of his trip in his Series I Land Rover. The following photos are scans from his book.

Land Rover is the perfect combination of all-terrain vehicle and luxurious performance car. At Eurocar-Werk, we have been servicing and repairing Land Rovers and Range Rovers since they were introduced into the U.S. April 1986. Our mechanics know and respect these vehicles. You'll notice a difference in the amount of pride we take in the quality of our service. So whether you use your Land Rover for off-roading and now your LR3's suspension has a fault, or your LR2鈥檚 rear differential simply needs an inspection, trust Eurocar-Werk. We have a wealth of Land Rover I had to look at the tach to see if it had started. Slide the six-speed automatic鈥檚 shifter into "D" (or "L" if you want to use the non-intuitive buttons on the side of the lever to swap cogs), and you're on your way. The transmission shifts smoothly on the way up. But when you floor it, the tranny jerks as the autobox drops a couple of gears to propel the 2.5-ton family hauler with some semblance of alacrity. The Acadia鈥檚 not quick but neither does it block traffic; its 275hp 3.6-liter V6 ambles the big rig from rest to 60 miles per hour in just under eight seconds. Because of the CUV's smooth ride and abundant sound insulation, once sufficient speed is attained, it鈥檚 a pleasure to putter about town or cruise the interstate.

Why don鈥檛 CX-5鈥檚 sell like the others? Does it have a poor reliability rating by Consumer Reports? I鈥檝e read conflicting things about its reliability, and I can鈥檛 imagine it would come close to the Camry anyway, which is why I鈥檒l probably still proceed to buy the Camry. Does it have a really poor resale value? Are they expensive to maintain and repair and not mechanic friendly (I want something inexpensive to maintain because I have a BMW now!)? Are parts not readily available if you need something fixed? Is it because the CX-5 only has two generations and only been around since 2013 and not proven like the others? Does Mazda not stand behind their product after the sale? Does it cost more to insure? Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I don鈥檛 understand the sales figures because I've read great things about the CX-5 and people seem to like it.
