Should You Buy The Land Rover Discovery?

Should You Buy The Land Rover Discovery?

The Discovery has a 3 liter, turbocharged SDV6 Diesel engine. It also has Intelligent Stop/Start technology. You won't get the fuel economy of much smaller vehicles, but the load space available and ability to negotiate through small spaces make it a better choice. If you're shopping for an SUV of this size, you already know that the fuel economy will not be nearly the same as other much smaller vehicles. Land Rovers have a distinctive design that is enhanced by a newly designed grille, mirrors, and bumper. This isn't a sports car or a luxury vehicle. You won't get smooth lines and an elegant profile, but the vehicle that is built for usability is still attractive in design. Choose design options for the exterior such as the black design pack. Plus there are 17 exterior colors to choose from. The interior is both attractive and practical. You can choose leather with reflective glass and choose from a range of interior finishes.

This is a car that has army blood running through its veins. The driving position is very upright and feels close to the b-pillar, so the best, and perhaps traditional way to drive a Defender 90 is with the driver鈥檚 window wound down and one arm resting on the window sill. If you鈥檙e tall, your left knee will slightly interfere with the steering wheel when you go for the clutch, but only just. The front seats are comfortable and well padded, and look rather sleek with the optional partial leather and cloth material. The rear seats are equally as comfortable. Travelling in the rear of a Defender 90 has to be one of the most fun experiences and something everyone should do once in their life, especially off road. Access to the rear seats is best accessed through the rear door, using the foldable foot step to climb up. The dash instruments are easy to read and all the available switchgear is less than an arm鈥檚 length away.

Get your 2015 Land Rover LR2 as soon as it arrives in dealer showrooms, because after this year, it鈥檚 history! That鈥檚 right鈥攆or better or worse, this compact 5-seat luxury crossover is slated to be replaced by the debuting Discovery Sport, offering a new 9-speed auto-manual transmission and some ultra-futuristic bells and whistles. But for now, the 2015 LR2, known as the Freelander outside the U.S., returns for its swan-song year with all its numerous bangles and baubles intact. Again, 3 trims鈥擝ase, HSE and HSE LUX鈥攃omprise the LR2 lineup for the upcoming year, with all iterations delivered with standard 4-wheel drive (4WD) to once more give this little Rover its traditional off-road prowess. Actually, it鈥檚 an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system sporting Land Rover鈥檚 Terrain Response technology, featuring driver-selectable modes to adjust engine torque and braking to particular types of terrain and conditions, while throwing in descent control to complement an altitudinous ride height.

So we can see resting voltage, drop when cranking, how long the engine takes to start, and the operation of the alternator. On these cars the battery is under the hood and that was where we hooked the scope first. Here is what we saw. On the left side of the screen you see the battery resting voltage, which is just under 12. The battery was just two months old. The resting voltage of a fully charged lead-acid car battery at room temperature should be about 12.8 volts. The reading in this car indicated a defective or discharged battery. The battery voltage dropped to 9.65 volts, which is below the acceptable limit of 10 volts. When crank voltage drops below 10 volts some of the computers drop offline, and set low voltage faults. Cranking starts to sound slow. This is an unacceptable reading, but again going point to either a defective or discharged battery. Since the battery was new, and replaced another with the same symptom, we proceeded on the assumption this was not a simple battery problem. We relocated the scope to the alternator, which is at the opposite end of the high power cabling in this car.
