Ineos In Talks With Ford To Build New Land Rover Defender-style Cars In UK
Chemicals company Ineos is in talks to build a new 4x4 car at Ford鈥檚 Bridgend factory in a move that could save more than 1,000 jobs. Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the UK鈥檚 richest person, wants to assemble a vehicle 鈥渋n the spirit of鈥?the classic Land Rover Defender. The Brexiteer announced in August that he was leaving the UK to live in Monaco but has said he wants to build the car in Britain. Ineos is now in discussions with Ford to use part of its plant in South Wales, according to the Financial Times, which cited three people close to the talks. Mr Ratcliffe鈥檚 firm is seeking to use the part of the plant in which Ford makes engines for Jaguar Land Rover. Ford鈥檚 contract with JLR for petrol engines ends in 2020 and the US car manufacturer has warned that 1,100 jobs at Bridgend could go unless the deal is renewed. Building the new model at Ford鈥檚 South Wales plant would therefore be a significant boost to the UK鈥檚 car industry, which is under threat as the country prepares to leave the EU.

The new Land Rover is slightly smaller than previous models, earning it the Baby Land Rover title. It's the kind of model that Land Rover really wants to push to the green market as well, as it will feature technology increasing efficiency and further boosting the green credentials that Land Rover wants to offer the market. These technologies will include the stop-start system and a hybrid drivetrain, both that are likely there to reduce CO2 emissions in this range of vehicle. I started working on my current project almost straight away, and was one of the first to join that team, so my initial work was all about writing the base software the component is relying on. Did the scope of your work change as the programme progressed? As with most industry software, it needs to be tested and fully verified to make sure it works as expected. My work changed from writing the core software to a more integration/test-oriented scope. Moreover, I had the opportunity to interview new candidates as we鈥檙e hiring a lot of talented people, but also attend college-organised career fairs. Can you describe a typical day in your role? We follow the Agile and Scrum development processes, which consists of two-week 鈥榮prints鈥?(a sprint is a set of tasks that need to be developed during the sprint time) and daily stand-ups. A typical day for me would thus be working on my tasks, reporting my work at our daily stand-up, checking some emails and participating in the team鈥檚 Agile process. How do your responsibilities compare to more experienced employees鈥? In my team, we are all writing code for the same software component and everyone is responsible for reviewing and testing code of other developers to make sure we are delivering good code. It is then up to the tech lead of our team to finally integrate the reviewed code in the main build. Do you feel more prepared for working life after completing this programme?
