Scientists Working On Invisibility Cloaking Device, Possible Use In Automotive Industry?

Mercedes has been working on the technology for this feature over in Germany. They made a B-Class hatchback, well, turn invisible from a distance. However if this comes as a standard or add-on feature, it's not going to be cheap. 263,000 in flexible LED mats, and dozens of technicians to bring the idea to life, and it's only one side of the car! To bring this invisibility cloak to life Mercedes had to cover the car (in this case, half of it) with flexible LEDs. Then on the other side they have hooked up a camera that records the cars surroundings, re-formats it to the correct aspects of the LEDs, which in turn makes you invisible from a distance. However, LEDs and man power were not the only things required, Mercedes also had to install roughly 1,100 lbs of equipment including power sources, computers, and more. With all that extra weight the question is, how fast will it go? Who would benefit from a feature like this?

Following its takeover of Siemens VDO Automotive, German supplier Continental is on its way to rival Robert Bosch as the biggest automotive supplier in the world. Continental may have to use 2008 to consolidate and integrate its acquisition, but there is no doubt the group has plans to grow further. Meanwhile, Japan's Denso may actually overtake Bosch before anyone else does. The winners will be: Shareholders of attractive mid-sized suppliers with a skill or a technology that either Continental or Bosch needs to have. The losers will be: Automakers that push too hard for price cut. Continental and Bosch are big enough to walk away. Some industry experts believe automakers will begin canceling dealers' contracts in 2008, with the changes taking effect by 2010. Others think Brussels will continue the so-called block exemption for one or two more years. Some think the rules will be dropped. Events in 2008 will determine which opinion is correct. The winners will be: Automakers that establish a cooperative relationship with their dealers and, thus, end up selling more cars. The losers will be: Owners of small and mid-sized dealerships that cannot compete with the giants. The dollar is likely to stay strong in 2008, forcing more European carmakers to consider or decide on starting or increasing production in North America. VW is already looking at possible locations for a US plant. Daimler has indicated it would consider expanding local production.
