Timing Chain Problems 2019-newer Jaguar Land Rover AJ V8 Engines
Land Rover / Jaguar AJ V8 cam chains - post 2010. One weakness is in the tensioners, which are lightweight aluminum and plastic. The cam chain tensioners have hard steel rams that wear into the guide rails. Over time the tensioners can jam in the holes, leading to loss of tension. The oil pump/injection pump chain guides are plastic with a spring steel tensioner that can weaken. We鈥檝e seen a couple modes of failure in these engines. The first is when the tensioners wear holes in the chain guides because the steel tension rams are harder than the guides. Land Rover addressed that sometime around 2014 with the addition of hardened steel caps on the cam chain guides. However, the engines still seem to have problems. One concern we have is that, as of summer 2019, Land Rover had not updated the tensioner itself - just the guide rails. All we can do is hope the tensioners themselves are not part of the problem.

The LR2鈥檚 small size, compared to Land Rover鈥檚 full-sized LR3 and Range Rovers, is misleading. Both outside and inside, the 2009 Land Rover LR2 feels like a rather big vehicle. And yet, the LR2 performs admirably in urban environments for parking in tight spaces, commuting to work, going on shopping trips and hauling around the kids. On my road test, I found the 2009 Land Rover LR2 drives well in all performance and handling categories. Acceleration is excellent for such a heavy vehicle. On my highway test, the LR2 bolted rather quickly down the freeway and then glided along wonderfully at lightning-fast speeds. Braking felt a bit too sensitive at times, but definitely responsive. Handling, especially the tight turning radius, was impressive in my city driving tests. As for suspension, the LR2 feels much more like an SUV rather than a car with its slight pitching and rolling on bumps and turns.
INTERVIEW - Following two successful experiments with kanban boards, Jaguar Land Rover decided to extend the reach of its lean product development activities to include all new vehicle programs. Here鈥檚 how the story unfolded. Planet Lean: Jaguar Land Rover has recently started to apply lean principles to its product development activities. Tell us about this experience. The pace of innovation is accelerating and developments in vehicle technologies add to increasing complexity. These converging trends present exciting engineering challenges and require increasingly rapid product development capability. We see great opportunities in borrowing ideas from the agile software community and adapting them to new vehicle development. We began in earnest in 2014 by tracking CAD progression on a kanban board. We really knew we were onto something, with significant results about six months in, when an external report captured the positive effects these changes were having on the vehicle program. A second program gave even better improvements in quality and delivery times and now we have a remit to apply to all new vehicle programs.
Jaguar Land Rover is poised to deliver a major boost to the Government's plans to boost growth by confirming this week that it will build a 拢400m engine plant in the Midlands that will potentially create up to 2,000 jobs. The Sunday Telegraph understands JLR could announce the engine plant as early as Monday alongside Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, and that it has secured financial support from the Government to bring the plant to the UK. The engine plant will be based at the i54 business park in Wolverhampton, which has been made an enterprise zone. The Coalition has also offered around 拢10m of support for the JLR plant, although it is not clear what form this will take. The car industry has been identified as "crucial" by the Government if the UK is to increase the size of its manufacturing base and exports. JLR's decision to expand into a new factory will be warmly welcomed.
