Top 10 Cars We Said Goodbye To In 2019

With the Nissan Cube getting cut last year, it was just a matter of time before the Scion xB joined the party. The model helped pave the way for Toyota鈥檚 youth-centric brand when it was first introduced, but the boxy styling wasn鈥檛 enough to keep shoppers interested. Scion had its fair share of new introductions this year, however, with the iM and iA now available on the market. There鈥檚 also a crossover in the pipeline that was previewed with the C-HR concept at the 2015 L.A. It鈥檚 perfectly understandable if you don鈥檛 recognize the Toyota Venza or knew it was even offered. The Camry-based crossover never quite caught on since its initial launch in 2009 and after one generation, it has been deemed unfit for the market. Just to give you an idea of how badly the Venza sold, it moved as many units annually as the Camry does monthly. Production on the Volkswagen Eos ended earlier this year as hardtop convertible models are slowly fading with consumers preferring soft-top versions or even panoramic sunroofs. Getting cut from the lineup was no secret, since Volkswagen celebrated its demise with a Final Edition model in the U.S. After nine years of production, the German automaker produced about 230,000 units.

200,000 supercharged V8 Range Rover Autobiography, it鈥檚 hard to see much resemblance to that hardy Land Rover that has barely changed since WWII. But the lineage is there, with the original Range designed in an attempt to tame the Defender into something more civilised. Rolls Royce coach-builder Tickford created almost 650 Station Wagons from the late 1940s, followed by the Road Rover concept in the mid-fifties, but both failed to catch on. This was a good thing, because in the 鈥?0s, spurred by a need for new homes for the recently acquired 3.5-litre V8 from Buick, the Range Rover took shape. While the more common extras specified on a Defender may well be a safari snorkel or a winch, Sir Winston Churchill鈥檚 came with something more befitting someone of his gravity. The passenger seat of the Series 1 was extra wide so he could fit in it, accompanied by a fold-down arm rest and a leather-clad grab handle. It even had a special place for his trowel in the glove compartment, so Churchill could practice his hobby of bricklaying as he was driven around his country estate.

Mars 2020 will also carry upgraded versions of some of the cameras that Curiosity fields today, including its SuperCam (upgraded version of Curiosity鈥檚 ChemCam). It even has a small detachable drone, the Mars Helicopter Scout, that carries no technology other than cameras, but it鈥檚 a proof of concept technology demo that will show if small craft can effectively scout Mars. One wonders if it鈥檚 capable of holding still long enough to take a photo, thereby giving us the first selfie a combined rover-drone will be capable of shooting of itself while standing (rolling) on another planet. Unlike Curiosity, Mars 2020 is explicitly being treated as a precursor mission towards eventual manned human exploration. The Mars 2020 rover is supposed to set aside of a cache of material that humans might one day return to gather. It will deploy new precision landing technology and measure the hazard levels posed by Martian dusts in various contexts. Mars is capable of suffering global sandstorms, some of which have killed rovers before. Sandstorm hazards are a very real risk that future astronauts will need to deal with. Mars 2020 will land in Jezero Crater to explore our neighbor.
