Volvo And Land Rover Differential Problems

Volvo And Land Rover Differential Problems

This 2010 Volvo XC70 came to us with about 96K miles, and a loud noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The noise was noticeable at low and moderate speeds while driving, and sounded like a loud whine or hum depending on vehicle speed. Initially this noise sounded like a defective wheel bearing but on further exam we determined the noise was in fact coming from the rear differential, the gear system that transmits force from the transmission to the rear wheels. We鈥檝e seen this before, both on the later model Volvo and the Land Rover LR2 vehicles, and it鈥檚 not a good sign. This differential design has been in use in the Volvo world since the 2008 to at least the 2014 model year, so it鈥檚 something to consider if you own a vehicle in that range. We service a tremendous amount of Volvo XC70s, and have seen the problem largely on those models, but have read reports of it being an issue on the S80 as well. Now the earlier Volvos had their own set of differential or bevel gear problems, which you can read about on our blog at Volvo AOC problems.

Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team has less to do than initially planned. Land Rover scrapped plans for an ultra-opulent Range Rover SV Coupe in late January, and now we learn that the hardcore Discovery SVX off-roader is no longer headed to production. Autocar reported the model's death on Friday, though Jaguar-Land Rover spokesman Nathan Hoyt told Motor Authority the final decision was made months ago. The brand quietly sent a bulletin to customers who had placed orders for the Discovery SVX to explain the model was no longer planned. Notably, the SUV added JLR's supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine to the Discovery lineup. Hoyt told MA, which effectively killed the Discovery SVX's shot at production. He added the SVX badge isn't going away, however. It will live on for other models, perhaps on a rumored Defender SVX. Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern said in 2017 that the SVX would "arguably" be right at home on the 2021 Defender. The Discovery SVX first graced the world in concept form at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. At that time, Land Rover declared a production version would follow in late 2018. That timeframe came and went, and now we know the SUV's final fate. 3.2 billion cost-cutting plan to boost savings and cash flow through 2020. In January, JLR also announced it would cut 4,500 jobs as part of the cost-cutting measures outlined in the plan. Jaguar Land Rover and other British automakers face an uncertain future in the face of undetermined Brexit plan. A so-called no-deal Brexit, in which no trade deals are negotiated, would prove very costly to British car brands. It's not all gloom, though. Land Rover this week unveiled its long-rumored turbocharged inline-6 engine, which will debut in the Range Rover Sport HST. The inline-6 joins the Ingenium family of engines and replaces the ancient and inefficient 3.0-liter supercharged V-6.

Firewood has been a problem for us every year on the Great Farm. Not availability: we're surrounded by wood: we own or lease about 14 acres of prime New England woodlot, capable, by the traditional estimate, of delivering the same number of cords of wood each year. Far more than we use. But finding the work time to cut, buck, split, stack and dry the four or five cords or more we should really have piled up each year, that has often defeated me. This year I gave up on making wood during the wet spring when the tractor couldn't move in the woodlot, and instead did a huge insulation project. So now I have to buy in some more "outside" wood. This means money, which is tight, and work time, which is also tight. One place I know will deliver. 600, but that wood generally isn't dry enough. Most sellers also sell stuff that's way too green.

The new 2020 Land Rover Defender is almost upon us, and spy videos have been popping up left and right of test mules tooling around public streets. This latest video, courtesy of Pistonheads, isn't from a public street, though鈥攊t's from the Nurburgring. The Green Hell isn't the first place you'd think Defender owners would go, and yet, engineers have taken it upon themselves to get some lapping done during one of the track's industry test pool sessions. The driver isn't going easy, either鈥攜ou can see the truck swaying as it enters corners, and hear its tire squeal for dear life. There's no telling what Land Rover could be testing here鈥攊t could be anything, from how the car handles sharp turns in direction to how its transmission reacts to elevation changes. Normal cars get tested there all the time, not just sports cars. It's just strange to see a car so out of place. Though, this does give us hope for some Defender track day lightweight special. In our dreams, anyway.
