And many other places. Front-seat riders will find the Defender inviting, but positioning is awkward in the rear seats as the twin buckets sit high, and are now forward-facing. The leather seats and a/c are expected, of course, although optional on lower-trim models. Somewhat unexpected, however, is a basic CD-equipped stereo as an option on the base model. As a sop to audiophiles, perhaps, the top XS trim levels offer standard iPod compatibility. It would be easy to simply forget the urban jungle and take the Land Rover Defender鈥檚 10-inch-minimum ground clearance on a full-time all-wheel drive through a real jungle. Being jarred around town should remind you that the double-live-axle, coil-spring suspension is begging to claw its way up (and down) some 40-degree grades, not avoid potholes or cruise the highway. Certainly the Defender can do that, but you might as cage a gazelle at the zoo. This baby wants to climb, slide, dodge boulders and ford streams. You can keep it in polite company, of course, but if you want to get your money鈥檚 worth from a Land Rover Defender, you鈥檒l take it in the dirt let it play rough.

There has also been a splash of coverage about the possibility of life on Titan (see this MSNBC article as an example or this more sensational article from the Telegraph or the original press release). Like the discovery of methane on Mars, the news isn't the discovery of life but rather the composition of the atmosphere that indicates that life could be present. In the case of Titan, it's the absence of chemicals in the atmosphere that could be compatible with the presence of a methane-based life on Titan. Chris McKay, who has proposed that the absence of these chemicals could be a sign of life, warns that life remains the least probable explanation for the data and computer modeling. His essay makes interesting reading (Have we discovered evidence for life on Titan?). As an editorial note, whether to proceed with the work necessary to enable a Mars sample return in a decade or so probably remains the key decision for the Decadal Survey. A sample return on this schedule probably requires that the Mars program continues to consume a bit less than half the planetary program budget. If that continues, then there is not enough money to fly both the envisioned rate of Discovery and New Frontiers missions and the Jupiter Europa Orbiter. The reports on Titan's atmospheric chemistry works makes Titan an even more interesting place to explore.

The all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 redefines the compact premium 4x4 class. New from the ground up, Freelander 2 delivers outstanding on-road performance as well as the class-leading off-road ability of a true Land Rover. A dynamic design, purposeful stance, smart and spacious interior, and an abundance of advanced technologies complete the package. Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. The 233 PS (171 kW) i6 petrol engine provides a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h) and 0-60 mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds (0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds). Combined fuel economy is 25.2 mpg (11.2 litres/100 km). The engine is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission, with Land Rover's CommandShift offering manual sequential gear changes when required. There is also a driver-selectable sport mode, for livelier performance. Straight-six engine configurations are ideal for delivering engine smoothness, and the very compact new unit in Freelander 2 is small enough to mount transversely, a first in the compact 4x4 sector and one of the vehicle's many innovations.

The model will top Kia鈥檚 lineup and joins a slew of new crossovers coming to the segment, including the Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Ascent, and the upcoming Hyundai Palisade, which shares a platform with the Telluride. The SUV will fit up to eight people, and power will come from a V-6 engine. Aston Martin is in the middle of a massive product offensive that will run through 2023. And that process wouldn鈥檛 be complete without introducing an SUV. Development prototypes of the DBX look great with their sloped roofs and signature Aston grilles, but we can鈥檛 wait to see the vehicle with all its camouflage off. The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf won the MotorTrend Car of the Year award when it first came out, so we鈥檙e curious to see how much VW will improve the sensible small car in the next iteration. The new Golf (the 2019 model is shown here) will receive a mild hybrid powertrain with a 48-volt electrical system. This will allow it to 鈥渃oast鈥?with the combustion engine turned off completely, aiding fuel economy. We鈥檝e seen the S models, but Porsche still hasn鈥檛 debuted the rest of the new 911 lineup. Although Porsche hasn鈥檛 announced all the variants, we鈥檙e on the watch for the base Carrera and other models, and we鈥檙e particularly eager to see a potent version like the Turbo, GT3, or GT2. Don鈥檛 expect any huge design changes, though. The new 911 S models feature minimal styling updates, including small tweaks to the headlights and bumpers, and a new full-width LED bar in the rear. Genesis was spun off as Hyundai鈥檚 luxury brand just three years ago, and it has already made three competent sedans. Now, Hyundai鈥檚 premium marque will finally have the chance to cash in on the SUV craze when it introduces the GV80. In 2017, Genesis debuted a concept version equipped with a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, but the production model is more likely to use a twin-turbo V-6.
