The 2019 Land Rover Defender Online Configurator Is Live And I 'Built' This Absolute Stunner

The 2020 Land Rover Defender debuted today at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and now the online configurator is live. Go ahead and option yours up to see if you can spec one as gorgeous as this one I just configured. I鈥檓 sitting with Jalopnik weekend editor Mack Hogan here in Frankfurt and we鈥檙e in a bit of a pickle as we try to configure the perfect 2020 Land Rover Defender. For one, the Defender 90 isn鈥檛 yet online, meaning we have no choice but to go with the four-door. Mack and I both agree that we like the looks of the four-door better, but the off-roader and cheapskate in me would definitely go for the two-door. 12,000 dearer. (Yes, there鈥檚 a 12 grand delta between the four and six-cylinder 110). Our initial thought was to just drop the 12 large because鈥攚e can all agree鈥攊nline-sixes are awesome. Also, even the four-banger Defender weighs over 4,815 pounds, and do we really want to be lugging that around with only 296 horsepower? The answer is 鈥渘o.鈥?On top of that, it appears that we can鈥檛 option a brown interior with the four-cylinder 110, and neither of us are fans of black interiors. We had no choice but to add the Explorer Pack, because the roof rack, side storage bin, snorkel, and fender flares just look awesome. Seriously, compare the image above to the one below. But despite the nice interior and the bigger motor, something wasn鈥檛 right. 58,491.55, is quite a bit lower than that inline-six Defender, and with those white wheels, it just looks right. But now it鈥檚 your turn. Hit up Land Rover鈥檚 configurator and show us how you鈥檇 build your new Defender.

Lane-departure warning, automated emergency braking, and rear park-distance control are now standard on all models. An optional Drive Pack adds blind-spot monitoring and a new system called the Intelligent Speed Limiter, which can read speed-limit signs and restrict the car from going over the limit (reassuringly, the system can be turned off). For those Range Rover owners who tow, there鈥檚 also a new system called Advanced Tow Assist that is said to make it easier to reverse with a trailer. There are no changes in store for the 2017 Range Rover Sport鈥檚 powertrain choices, which in the U.S. 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6, a 3.0-liter supercharged gasoline V-6, and a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 with either 510 horsepower in the Supercharged model or 550 horsepower in the high-performance SVR. 66,645, and more detailed pricing info for the rest of the range should be available closer to the 2017 Sport鈥檚 on-sale date later this year.

Tata again, has the most economical parts basket with the Toyota Hilux in 2nd spot. GWM Steed has taken 3rd place.. Second behind the Amarok is the GWM with a repair basket of R13,214. Tata just leads the crash parts total with R46,732. The Hilux, which is locally built and so has the advantage of having many of the body pressings made here, is not far behind at R48,761. The Nissan NP200, Chev Utility and the Nissan NP300 slot into the first 3 places. Both the first two vehicles coming in with lower basket prices than last year, Kinsey said. The two Nissans have the lowest servicing costs - NP200 R1,992 and the NP 300 R2,189. Chev and Isuzu are most cost efficient for repair parts - the Chev Ute with a repair basket of R6,606 and the Isuzu KB250 with R7,738. Repairs for these benefit by having no rear door to add to the costs - the NP 200 is best at R31,756 followed by R35,497 for the Isuzu. This category鈥檚 price range starts from R458,996 for the Volvo S60 TR to R743,600 for a Jaguar XE2.0.

The larger Defender 110 has 10.7 cubic feet of space behind its third row, 34.0-34.6 cubes behind its second row, and a max of 69.0 cubic feet in 3-row models or 78.8 cubic feet in 2-row versions. Beyond the two body styles, the new Land Rover Defender also offers two powertrains and multiple trim levels. The base powertrain setup, called P300, is available only in the Defender 110 base and S trim levels, and comprises a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 paired with an 8-speed automatic. This is the higher-output version of Land Rover鈥檚 2.0-liter turbo (as seen in other models such as the new Discovery Sport), and it makes 296 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque from 1,400 to 4,000 rpm. The step-up option, the P400, is a turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter inline-6 bolstered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 3.0L MHEV is standard on the Defender 90 and on the higher-spec versions of the Defender 110鈥攖he SE, HSE, X, and First Edition.
