I often host clubs, committee meetings and speakers in my home. The standard refreshments in our community are bought or homemade cakes, soft drinks, bottled water, packaged "snack" foods, fruit, and nuts. I prefer not to buy the prepared foods both because of health and cost. There are almost always leftovers, and I don't want the family to eat them. I happen to love potato chips and will eat them when offered. But I always regret it, and find I don't sleep well after indulging. I figure I'm not the only one who appreciates healthier options. My other problem is that as much as I preach about planning, when I make my grocery list I usually forget I am hosting soon. So I get stuck either buying in a more expensive store or having to make do with what I have. Necessity is the mother of invention so I've come up with options for refreshments from foods I usually have on hand. Homemade cake, cookies, or muffins. Popcorn. You can flavor it with grated cheese, hot pepper or other spices.
A lot of that comes down to the cabin, which is bathed in swathes of Nappa leather, brushed aluminium and wood trim. It鈥檚 a supremely luxurious place to pass the miles and wouldn鈥檛 look out of place in a car wearing a six-figure price tag. On the move the 2.0-litre motor is a little gruff, but once up to speed it begins to fade into the background, helped by the slick nine-speed automatic transmission, which slurs the gears effortlessly. Our test car was fitted with Airmatic air suspension, but in the UK the 300 d will only be offered with standard steel springs. Still, as we鈥檝e come to expect from Mercedes鈥?top end models, the ride is plush and consistently smooth even on standard 20-inch wheels. We鈥檒l have to wait and see how the standard steel springs fare when the GLE arrives in the UK in the spring. One piece of tech designed to improve the GLE鈥檚 off-road prowess and on-road comfort is a new E-Active Body Control system, but it鈥檚 only compatible with six-cylinder models.
