Who is the owner of Jaguar & Land Rover? The Land Rover line of cars was established in 1948 by Maurice Wilks, who was the chief designer at the Rover Company. The company started producing the Land Rover car from 1948 as part of its product lines. Due to the success and profitability of the car, it went on to become its own separate brand. In 1967, the brand was sold to Leyland Motors, where it maintained its autonomy as a separate brand. In 1975, Leyland Motors merged with British Motor Holdings, becoming British Leyland. The brand continued operating under the new company, until 1986, where it was established as a separate company, but still as a division of the British Leyland. It later went on to become part of the Rover Group PLC when British Leyland was acquired by British Aerospace. In 1994, the group was acquired by BMW, and the brand ownership was taken up by the German multinational. BMW broke up the group in 2000, and the Land Rover division was acquired by the Ford Motor Company.

Forster will continue to be a non-executive director of Tata Motors. Prakash Telang, MD of India operations, and Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, who reported to Forster will now report directly to the board. Forster said in a statement. Forster joined the group in February 2010 as its CEO from General Motors where he was the head of Europe operations.
