THE ULTIMATE CAR GUIDE

THE ULTIMATE CAR GUIDE

The rear seat tray, similar to airplanes, is standard and makes meal time while traveling an enjoyable experience. Oh, before we leave, cargo space is decent enough. Offered from August 2002 to July 2004 is the Zeta 1,980cc that carries 130hp at 5,400rpm and 183Nm at 4,500rpm that can be had with a manual transmission. Replacing this is the Duratec 23 2,261cc having 157hp at 6,000rpm and 200Nm at 4,000rpm and is the common engine among Philippine market Escapes. It may look like an SUV but the driving feel is similar to a car, which is a good thing. Expect understeers though when driven at high speeds. For models equipped with AWD, when the system detects some slipping, power is distributed to the rear wheels. The system can be locked for the whole time and adds some security and stability. One of the outstanding choices in the compact SUV category, that's if you choose the right engine. Oodles of space for both driver and passenger with a reliable and durable chassis. There was no wonder it sold longer without any flashy designs or amenities, just the basics.

The Detroit News comes right to the point when it says that the LR2's "interior is luxurious." Most reviewers concur. The LR2 officially seats five in two rows of seats, but Automobile Magazine feels that only "and four large adults will be perfectly happy to tackle long journeys." With only four on board, though, the accommodations should be comfy. The back row isn't quite as luxurious. These include an Alpine nine-speaker audio system with six disc CD changer, six-way power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, and a push-button starter. Several reviewers take issue with the LR2's push-button starter, which requires placing the key fob in a slot before it will work. The 2008 Land Rover LR2 comes standard with an Alpine nine-speaker audio system with six disc CD changer. The LR2 has 58.9 cubic feet of cargo space available with the rear seats folded, 26.7 cubic feet with the rears seats upright. Reviewers find this disappointing.

The 1.0-litre engine is a good unit, with a maximum 172Nm of torque spread wide from 1,500 to 4,000rpm, which means it鈥檚 easy to get the best out of it, especially around town. It鈥檚 reasonably refined, with a pleasant three-cylinder engine note when you build up the revs. Sadly, it鈥檚 neither as characterful as the Citroen鈥檚 1.2-litre three-cylinder, nor as responsive and fun to rev as the Mazda鈥檚 2.0-litre petrol engine. It has a sweeter manual gearshift than the Citroen, although both are way behind the Mazda鈥檚 shift. The Kona performed well in our tests, accelerating from 0-60mph in 10.1 seconds despite heavy rain. That was quicker than the more powerful C3, which struggled for traction off the line. The Hyundai was also a match for the naturally-aspirated Mazda in-gear, despite having half its engine capacity, thanks to that wide spread of turbocharged torque. Testers鈥?notes: 鈥淭he Kona is one of only a few small SUVs to be offered with four-wheel drive.
