This Land Rover Has Style, Function And Problems
An editor once asked me to name the worst vehicle of the past decade. It took all of 20 milliseconds to reply: Range Rover鈥檚 Freelander. Owners have wept openly over the frequent head gasket failures, lousy transmissions and faulty air conditioners. The cabin fan would spit water at occupants seemingly out of contempt. The condensate would also wreak havoc with the electrics. While Europeans had the option of a popular BMW diesel engine, North Americans got only the wheezy 175-hp 2.5 L V6 supplied by MG Rover, a company that almost single-handedly led to England鈥檚 de-industrialization. The Freelander was so unreliable, corporate master Ford mercifully terminated its importation in 2005 and retreated back to Gaydon, England, to rethink the whole compact SUV thing. The second-generation LR2 wisely jettisoned the Freelander name and adopted a modified version of Ford鈥檚 C1 platform that underpinned the Focus and Mazda3. More accurately, the 2008 LR2 shared portions of its unibody architecture and drivetrain with the Volvo S80, including the front suspension, firewall stamping and parts of its front subframe, along with a similar all-wheel-drive system.
The Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE also is available as a plug-in hybrid. This setup pairs a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic reverts back to the gas-powered V6, but with a 380-horsepower rating. A 518-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine comes in the Supercharged Dynamic and Autobiography Dynamic trims. This same engine makes 575 horsepower in the high-performance SVR. Each engine has ample power for most driving situations. The V8 provides better acceleration and hauls this large vehicle and a load of people or cargo more easily. Regardless of the powertrain, you鈥檒l get an eight-speed automatic transmission in the Range Rover Sport. So, if you are looking for a great vehicle for traveling on-road and off-road, the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is all that. The only drawback is its EPA mileage rating of 15-22 city and 20-28 highway, but again 鈥?oh well. It is a small price to pay for driving one of the best off-road vehicles in the world.
