Britney Spears arrived at the LA county courthouse at just after 8AM this morning to make an appearance before the bench in order to fight for custody of her children Sean Preston and Jayden James. Britney Spears showed up at the county courthouse for a custody hearing Tuesday without the usual screaming fans, signs and banners or frenzied paparazzi chase to the parking garage. Dozens of photographers, reporters, sheriff's deputies and prospective jurors recorded her arrival as a front-seat passenger in a white Land Rover. Then she disappeared into the garage. It's been three months since Spears slipped away from a psychiatric ward and stirred up a paparazzi car chase, a scene that looked like the beginning of even more erratic behavior for the troubled pop star. In the weeks that followed, she acted out of character, all right 鈥?she lay low and avoided the cameras. She spent time with family members. She found work, and succeeded at it.

I had expected a slight lag in the system as it switched from Mud/Sand to Rock Crawl, and with a bit of Hill Descent Control lobbed in simultaneously, but, like the chassis, there鈥檚 no slack. Overseeing matters from the throne-like sports seat, it鈥檚 a case of feet off the pedals, heart in your mouth, and roll over the crest. Even the novice off-roader (i.e: me) gets to feel like a hero. The Sport will tiptoe down a one-in-two slope without a stutter from the tyres, each brake working independently to ensure a straight, controlled descent, while passengers hang from their seatbelts. Striding up the other side with only sky in the windscreen, still no slip from the 20in wheels and no labouring from the 3.0-litre V6 is just as exhilarating. It鈥檚 difficult to state just how alien the Land Rover Defender feels to climb into, yet alone drive, after the new Range Sport. Strip off the badges and present both to a car-phobe and I鈥檇 wager Joe Bloggs would never know they鈥檙e products from the same manufacturer.

This UK-built Ingenium powerplant brings new levels of diesel comfort to the Discovery family thanks to a range of advanced features. Dual-isolated engine mounts and further optimised transmission mounts combine with variable cam timing on the exhaust side and twin balancer shafts for the upmost refinement. The advanced engine is the first Jaguar Land Rover powerplant to feature series sequential turbo technology to deliver its additional thrust. New Land Rover Discovery is also available with a powerful 258PS 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, badged Td6. The single-turbo engine features low-pressure exhaust recirculation, a two-stage oil pump and revised fuel-injector nozzle for improved responses, refinement and efficiency. This latest generation powertrain achieves a seven per cent reduction in CO2 emissions over the previous 256PS Discovery TDV6; down from 203g/km to 189g/km, and is capable of up to 39.2mpg (7.2l/100 km). The 258PS engine delivers stronger performance than before and the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint takes only 8.1 seconds (0-60mph in 7.7 seconds) - a reduction of 1.3 seconds. With a significant 600Nm of torque on offer, the new Td6 diesel delivers relaxed cruising refinement and towering all-terrain capability.

But it still slips badly between second and third. Most automatic vehicles, unless they are moving very heavy loads, spend their road time transitioning between those two gears. This truck has probably made it's last trip to Bangor or anywhere like that, unless I rebuild this transmission, or get a replacement. Both are possible, as is just scrapping the thing or selling it on, but there's time to make that decision later this year. For now, the Land Rover can fetch and carry cargo, and even act as our winter 4WD. I may look around for a larger trailer, to help in this new mission for the Rover. Then I got the Bolens lawnmower running again. Regular readers may remember that I bent a pushrod on this important piece of Womerlippi Farm equipment earlier this year, and so had to do a partial engine rebuild to replace said pushrod. The machine ran well for a short while after that but then quit unexpectedly just as we were getting going with the extension.
