Future Planetary Exploration

1.5 billion proposed for this year. Delaying the Europa mission prevents a bulge in spending requirements. For the rest of this decade, NASA鈥檚 new mission spending is dominated by the expensive Mars 2020 rover. The budget proposal also shows sharp budget increases late in the decade for the Discovery and New Frontiers programs. Launching the Europa mission by 2022 as mandated by Congress would require either greatly increasing overall planetary funding or cannibalizing other programs. Discovery and New Frontiers missions to the Flagship Europa mission. Experience has shown that large Flagship mission are more likely to have large cost overruns that play havoc with NASA鈥檚 budget. Countering this, the generous money that Congress has provided the mission so far as matured the design much more than is typical at this stage of development. That maturity makes cost overruns less likely. Europa isn鈥檛 Mars, and studying and eventually getting humans to Mars is NASA鈥檚 current overriding goal. Pure politics. Several of the Congressional leaders who are strongly backing the Europa mission and planetary exploration in general are highly conservative politically.

Last year I wrote a story about the frame rust that is beginning to cripple Discovery II trucks that run in snow country, particularly the 2003-4 models. Today I am pleased to show a new and more affordable alternative. Rovers North has begin selling rear frame sections that replace the last two feet of a Discovery II frame. You don't see much damage from a distance but when you look close the rear frame rails are totally destroyed. This happens because the rails are thinner than older Land Rovers, they are not protected inside, and they are designed in such a way that gravel can get inside. When that happens, salt water from winter roads soaks the gravel and the mix just eats the frame from inside out, but luckily only in the gravel spray areas behind the wheels. In some cases the shocks towers corrode, weaken and break. We see other issues like that but the main failure is what you see above - rot in the rear two feet. We remove the gas tank for safety and access.

The new wider and soft front seats are decadent, providing intense heat and 25 different massage programs. Even the armrests are heated. Rear-seat space is abundant, especially in the long-wheelbase models, which have enough rear legroom for a couple of Shaquille O鈥橬eals. It isn鈥檛 easy designing an SUV that looks both rugged and elegant, one that is understated but sexy and imposing, one that looks rich and expensive but falls short of ostentation and pretension. It isn鈥檛 easy but somehow the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover pulls it off. It鈥檚 a fantastic-looking thing, with slab sides, large glass and short overhangs. It's also surprisingly compact, with even the long-wheelbase model being only as long as a Chevy Traverse. The crease linking the headlights and taillights, which slices through the door handles, and ultimately underlines 鈥淩ange Rover鈥?on the SUV鈥檚 unique clamshell tailgate. Step up to the HSE model (our choice) and you get the Panoramic Roof, Oxford perforated leather, 14-way-power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, 20-inch wheels, a more powerful supercharged V6, and other features.

Land Rover LR2 Engine Whine and Poor Acceleration. Land Rover LR2 Engine Whine and Poor Acceleration. Hey guys, I drive a 2012 Land Rover LR2 with 50000 miles on it. I had drove 8 hours from one city to the other and all was smooth. After arriving at the hotel, I went to drive my car again for a quick 5 minute trip to the store when half way through the drive on the highway, I notice the engine has a whine coming from it. When the car is in Drive, you start hearing it past 1500 rpm, but when its in Park, you don't hear it at all. It also won't accelerate past 35-40 mph. There are no warning lights, no engine lights, no error messages popping up on diagnostics. I've taken it to 3 repair shops to no avail as they can't check the transmission due to Land Rover having a gear box transmission or something. Anyone have any clues as to what this is or experience it before? It's probably worth checking the diff, gearbox and transfer box oils. The LR2 is called the Freelander outside the US, which will probably help you find useful information. I'm a bot. Downvote to 0 to delete this comment. The whine makes me think of an alternator issue. Not sure though. My LR3 had a distinct whining sound and I just replaced the alternator last night - everything back to normal now. Could be the PVC pipe. I just took mine in and that was causing the engine to whine and overheat.
