Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft sent by the United States to reach Mars in 1964 and the U.S. Despite the large number of probes sent to Mars by the Soviet Union and the United States only seven of them landed successfully on the Martian surface. Soviet Union managed to claim the honor of being the first to land a probe on Mars in 1971 and it would be another 5 years before the United States finally land one on Mars.
