2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport

2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Off the bat, you can make out a new grille and front fascia from the Land Rover Discovery Sport test mule. It鈥檚 hard to tell exactly how those elements will end up looking when the wraps are taken out, but the lighting fixture, in particular, has two horizontal LEDs sitting at the bottom. The current Discovery Sport doesn鈥檛 have those. Even the lower intakes look different, too. That could be the case, but it could also be the case of the body wrap, once again, doing its best job at misdirecting us. The SUV鈥檚 profile looks similar to the current model. That鈥檚 expected considering that we鈥檙e only dealing with an updated look here. The rear section is interesting, though, because there are no cutouts. We do see what looks to be a pair of exhaust outlets on one side, but it鈥檚 really hard to tell given the angles from which some of the photos were taken.

The light-weight was a Land-Rover specially lightened so that it could be easily lifted by helicopter. Much of the bodywork can be quickly removed for air-transport. Most came as soft-tops, a few as hard-tops; many of the former are converted to HT when in private hands. 鈥?1968: S2A Air-transportable `Light-Weight' or `half-ton' introduced. 鈥?1970: Headlights moved to wings. 鈥?1972: S3 version. 鈥?1976: Diesel engine offered. 鈥?1983: End of production. Rover tried several times in the sixties to develop Land Rovers specifically for military use recognising there strength in this market. However the only vehicle that survived beyond the experimental stage was the 1/2 ton Lightweight. The prototype was drawn up in about 1965 to meet a specific requirement for an air-portable vehicle for the British Armed Forces. To get the Land Rover to meet the weight target the 1/4 ton vehicle was completely stripped then rebuilding with only the items deemed essential to make the vehicle mobile being added.

For starters, the New Discovery Sport features a 鈥淧remium Transverse Architecture鈥?mixing High Strength Steel (HSS) with a host of other materials for a car body that鈥檚 a quoted 10-percent stiffer. That translates into a more stable and quiet ride. The all-new Ingenium engine is available as a 48-volt 286 horsepower mild-hybrid, too, to assist the combustion engine in achieving lower fuel consumption. Land Rover says you could see gas savings of up to 6-percent. While there鈥檒l be gas and diesel versions of the New Discovery Series, there鈥檚 still no truly electrified plug-in powertrain yet. Still, I鈥檓 taking to heart the fact that the automaker reconfigured the chassis to accept a PHEV drivetrain in the near future. The two options for now, then, are the 2020 Discovery Sport S, and the sportier-Sport, R-Dynamic version. Both use the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with a 9-speed automatic as their starting point, with Land Rover鈥檚 second-generation All-Wheel Drive system. Land Rover takes performance on and off the road seriously. So, it鈥檚 worth noting some more tidbits about the suspension and architecture. Active Drive Dynamics, for example, continuously monitor surface and terrain conditions and adjust the SUV鈥檚 settings for optimum performance.

With the steepest part of their depreciation curve conveniently taken care of by somebody else, this makes the Discovery a prestigious and attractively priced used alternative to something like a new Toyota RAV4. Insurance will be Group 13 for the base Td5 models, Group 14 for the base V8 models and Group 15 for the range-topping ES variants, regardless of engine. The Series I was plagued by niggling build quality issues and although the Series II is far better screwed together it still suffers more than its fair share of annoying faults. Both mechanical and electronic gremlins have surfaced, and owners who harry their Discoveries through city streets using engine braking to decelerate on a regular basis often find themselves with a gearbox that feels like running a hot knife through bitumen. Always insist on a full service history. Be careful too if the car you're looking at has a towbar fitted, for this may mean that it has had a hard life dragging horse boxes out of muddy fields.
