2019 Initial Quality Study (IQS)

2019 Initial Quality Study (IQS)

Gap between Korean brands and others continues to widen: The three highest-ranking brands鈥擥enesis, Kia and Hyundai鈥攁re all from Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group, and the gap between these three brands and all others has widened considerably. Remarkably, 16 of 18 models from Hyundai Motor Group rank in the top three in their respective segments. These vehicles tend to perform especially well in the areas of infotainment and other electronic components. Domestic brands above average: Ford (83 PP100), Lincoln (84 PP100), Chevrolet (85 PP100), Dodge (90 PP100) and Buick (92 PP100) all perform better than the industry average of 93 PP100. Overall, Domestic-branded vehicles perform close to the average in most areas. All European brands are below average: In contrast to the success of the Korean automakers and the leading domestic and Japanese brands, all 10 European marques are below average. The largest gaps for the European vehicles are infotainment and other electronics.

We now paint BASF with the newer water-base process which is better for the environment. The new paint is also glossier and probably more durable than original. BASF is the original paint supplier to most of the European carmakers under the BASF, Diamont and Glasurit tradenames. All the corrosion was cleaned up underneath and Waxoyl hard wax was applied everywhere you can see. Clear Waxoyl cavity protector was sprayed in all the places you can鈥檛 see in hopes of slowing corrosion, which was not bad on this vehicle to begin with. The brakes and axles were fully overhauled and new hoses fitted. Wheels were refinished and shod with Michelin XZL military tires. The XZL is a very rugged tire; standard on Land Rover in rough climates. They are standard tires for the US military and NATO, and also popular in places like Africa or Afghanistan. We fitted a roof rack, upgraded the stereo, added undercoat and under floor sound deadening and did a thousand little things to make this vehicle special.

8,100 less than a bare-bones V6. That'll probably make the decision for a lot of folks, dropping the base F-Type into a whole 'nother class of sporty two-seaters. I'll posit, however, that the F-Type isn't a raw numbers car. It's a passionate thing that appeals to an emotional part of our brain. Just look at it! The coupe we tested, in Fuji White, was fresh as a mountain stream despite the platform's age. The sheetmetal is, quite simply, most of the appeal. Even the base wheels, 18-inch, 10-spoke alloys, look phenomenal. And since the F-Type 2.0 is sexy, undeniably quick enough to back up its sporting looks, and a significant price savings over a V6, it's almost a killer app. If only the little Ingenium turbo-four was as passionate as the F-Type itself. It's a workaday unit, coarse and gruff. After all, it sees duty in just about everything else Jaguar-Land Rover makes, from the lowly Discovery Sport to the big XJ. Its clattery four-cylinder noises and thrashiness don't jibe with the premium sports-touring vibe the rest of the car exudes. We've gotten used to, if not come to universally love, four-cylinder pony cars like the Mustang and Camaro, but the divergence in character between car and powerplant here is vast. It does the job, sure, but you enjoy the F-Type in spite of its engine, rather than because of it.
