Ample leg room up front, and plenty of spots to stow your gear and keep it neatly organized, leave the cabin practical as well as handsome. There鈥檚 1,794 liters of space, 24 seating combinations, and the ability to fit up to 7 people. The middle row is unexpectedly comfortable, with independent temperature controls and well-placed ventilation. As for the very back row of pop-up seats, kids might clamor to get back there and have a blast too, but adults may not be so entertained by the idea. Nevertheless, two extra seats for occasional use is a great option, should you need to transport extra friends along the way. 37,800 for a base model it鈥檚 a worthy way to land yourself a spot in the Land Rover club. The automaker鈥檚 goal of a premium compact SUV that鈥檚 equally good at city duty and back country excursions was an ambitious one. Overall, however, the new 2020 Defender clocks in at decent value, given the pedigree of the brand, the materials and ride quality, its hauling and seating options, and of course the technoloty and off-roading capabilities. In short, the 2020 Discovery Sport sits in a versatile middle-ground, promising the ability to go just about anywhere while still delivering welcome degrees of refinement and luxury. If I drive it gently I can almost eek out 20 mpg (19.54 is the best tank average so far) and the thing puts a big grin on my face every time it gets off pavement. Spending time on these forums and elsewhere, I looked at various sleeping platform and storage options, ranging from simple wood platforms with drawers to elaborate aluminum designs. Ultimately, I decided to borrow elements from Victory's design and showed them to a very capable friend up in Portland. We worked through the design together and he was interested in building it out for me. The platform bolts directly into the existing frame boltholes and hinges to fold up and down to accommodate the extra length: the finished product is 75鈥?long, plus a few extra inches with the seats all the way forward. A few weeks later, the platform was ready for the finishing touches so we installed it together.
In a depressed market, Volvo may only fetch between two and three billion, but Ford has decided to be aggressive when selling the automaker. After all, the company needs cash and the Volvo brand would be a nice jewel in anyone's crown, whoever that automaker turns out to be. To expedite the sale of Volvo, Ford has retained the services of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. to advise them. No one has stepped forward with an offer, but BMW is rumored to be interested in purchasing Volvo. In addition, several Chinese automakers could make a pitch for the company or perhaps Hyundai might make an offer to add the Swedish automaker to its portfolio. Right now it is all speculation 聳 Ford has yet to make an official announcement about Volvo and may hold off until after it meets with Congress. The Volvo sale could be a blow to Ford, but with its back to the wall it may be the only choice the automaker has. Though Ford insists that they have enough money to see themselves through until the end of 2009, the company is heavily leveraged, owing tens of billions of dollars to banks. If the Volvo sale doesn't take place and Ford's plea to Congress falls on deaf ears, then bankruptcy could be the only option to help save the beleaguered automaker. A last ditch option, but one that the Blue Oval may be forced to take.
