2019 Land Rover LR2

2019 Land Rover LR2

Land Rover鈥檚 unique Terrain Response is standard on all but the entry-level model, to make off-roading easier. Other interesting technologies include a new full-time intelligent 4x4 system for superior traction and better on-road fuel economy, and the patented Gradient Release Control, which improves driver confidence and control when releasing the brakes on steep and slippery slopes. Other features and options rare in this class include: keyless starter button, bi-xenon headlamps, adaptive front lighting, rain-sensing wipers and park distance control (front and rear). A two-part panoramic sunroof increases the cabin鈥檚 airiness. Air-conditioning is standard on all models and a full colour touch-screen DVD satellite navigation system is also available. The choice of top-level audio systems includes DAB digital radio and 12-speaker Dolby Prologic IIx Surround Sound with fibre-optic interconnects. An auxiliary audio connection (for iPods and MP3 players) is standard on all vehicles. Freelander 2 is a fresh and contemporary design, with its chiselled lines, chunky good looks and sporty energy.

I wish it were that simple, but I came to the conclusion that the fix goes in the following order from cheapest to most expensive. You just undo them, and sand them a little bit with sand paper and put them back tight. Put everything back together. For free: from the bottom of the car unplug the transmission connector (a round connector). In my case, somebody had changed the transmission connector and bent the pin, I straighten it up but that didn't fix the problem. Notice in the pic how the top pin is bent. This seems to work like 10% of the time. 400 dollars: change the transmission filter and flush the fluid. Red Line D6 ATF and the filter: ATP Automatic Transmission Filter Kit. If that doesn't work then its time to try more drastic (and expensive measures). 1500: replace the valve body. The valve body in these cars includes the transmission computer and solenoids which are subjected to the fluid all the time and go bad most of the time. You could get an estimate at a local transmission shop (I think they are better qualified). This seems to be the case like 15% of the time. And last but not least the transmission. 8000 dollars a brand new tranny because one of your clutches is worn and needs to be replaced. This seems to work like 10% of the time.

The question remains: Why is the Range Rover not popular? A fact: the Mercedes G-Wagen has more trans-Africa trips associated with it than the Range Rover! The Africa Overland Network only has five Range Rover trips listed, of which a few have broken links resulting in lost overland history. The website of Raymond and Nereide (Lilongwe Down) provides a good insight into the comforts and experiences of using a Range Rover TD6 (L322) across Africa. The third, but arguably the most important member of our team! A Range Rover Td6, made in Solihull, UK but designed in Germany it is half German, and also essentially a Brummie. Annoyed with being called a Chelsea Tractor, it鈥檚 pleased to have been selected for this mission to show what it really can do. And to kick some dust in the faces of all those tedious Toyota Landcruisers that everyone tells us we should be using instead.

Insiders at Land Rover know the seven-seater as 鈥楶roject L486鈥?and the new model is based on the Freelander platform. The car will have unique bodywork, styling and interior to mark it out as being more than a Freelander variant. The standard Freelander platform will need to be heavily modified, with an extended wheelbase to make room for the seven-seat configuration. The new model is likely to be closer in size to the Discovery than the Freelander. The seven-seater fits in to Land Rover鈥檚 range as a more road-focused car than the Discovery, with a lower kerbweight, sharper chassis, better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. It will have the Freelander鈥檚 front-biased four-wheel drive system with a centre diff to send torque to the slipping wheels. Other off-road aids will include hill descent control, traction control and stability control, all operated via the Terrain Response switch in the cabin. Engines and transmission will shared with the Freelander, Land Rover having secured powertrain supply from Ford as part of the deal under which it was sold to Tata.

This is however for the 2WD version, the 4WD drive model produces 45.6mpg and 165g/km. The Outlander isn't far off those figures, the 2.2 litre diesel engine giving off 169 g/km of CO2 and offering 43.5 miles per gallon. The Outlander's new diesel engine is also more powerful than the Freelanders- producing 174bhp as opposed to the 150bhp generated by the Freelanders 2.2 diesel. So how do they compare price wise? The Freelander entry level S model starts from 拢21,995 whilst the top of the range Freelander 2 HSE will set you back 拢32,995.00. The Mitsubishi Outlander costs from 拢22,099 for 4WD models and from 拢23,349 for 2WD drive versions, with the GX4 starting from 拢28,599. Both look very sturdy but the Land Rover has the edge, even with the recent style upgrade the Outlander is still rather 'bland'. As yet I am undecided if will be visiting my local Mitsubishi dealer in Somerset or heading to my local Land Rover dealership, as both have their plus points and their pitfalls.
