Jaguar Land Rover to move heaven and earth to drop CO2 levels to meet EU 2021 levels. Jaguar Land Rover will 鈥渢urn every stone鈥?including launching plug-in hybrids to bring its high average CO2 emissions down to an EU-approved level by 2021, JLR head of product development Wolfgang Ziebart said. 鈥淕oing forward we will assume that the electric part of the drivertrain will increase. The electric motor will become stronger and the combustion engine might get smaller,鈥?Ziebart said. By 2021, JLR must reduce CO2 to 132 grams per kilometer from 180g/km now, which is down from 242g/km in 2007, Ziebart told journalists at the company鈥檚 research center in Gaydon, central England. 鈥淭here is still a way to go for us to achieve this,鈥?Ziebart said. Half of that target will be achieved through changes to JLR鈥檚 powertrains, he said. When the Jaguar XE midsize sedan launches next year it will feature the automaker鈥檚 new range of four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines. The most economical diesel version from JLR鈥檚 Ingenium family will emit less than 100g/km of CO2, the company says. The base and HSE models come standard with the 5-seat setup; the 3rd-row/2-passenger seat is optional. Behind the third row is a fairly meager 10.1 cubic feet of luggage space.
It has called the car the Range Rover Velar, which is stupid because it means people like me are going to call it the Velour. And while that鈥檚 a fabulous seat fabric, it鈥檚 a terrible name with some terrible pleblon connotations. Also, it seems to serve no purpose. I was going to be petulant and simply ignore the Velar, but then I saw one. The Velar pulls off the same trick. Yes, it鈥檚 just a five-door SUV, but look at its lines, look at its detailing, look at its proportions and its stance. And then you鈥檒l be forced to agree that it is one of the five best-looking cars ever made. It鈥檚 so good-looking that, while I was considering a replacement for my Volkswagen Golf GTI the other day, it wouldn鈥檛 leave my head. So I asked Land Rover if I could borrow one for a few days. Inside, it looked even better.
