2019 Land Rover LR2 Review - Rugged Adventure Meets The Small Luxury SUV

2019 Land Rover LR2 Review - Rugged Adventure Meets The Small Luxury SUV

The LR2 could never live up to its nameplate if it didn鈥檛 perform well in adverse conditions. Luckily the first really nasty storm of the season showed up right as we received the car, making for some excellent test conditions. Although time and circumstances didn鈥檛 allow for any true off-road excursions or much snow driving, we spent multiple hours driving in the rain on flooded back roads and saturated freeways, and the LR2 never showed any signs of stress. We parked the LR2 in a mud hole that left lesser cars stuck, but all it took was a gentle tap on the gas and we were back on the road. At the heart of the LR2鈥檚 all-conditions capability is Land Rover鈥檚 permanent intelligent all-wheel drive, which uses a Haldex electronically controlled differential to continuously adjust front-to-rear torque as needed. Additionally, there are a host of electronic control systems, including electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, cornering brake control, roll stability control, hill descent control, and dynamic stability control.

In 1961, the diesel engine was bored out from 2.052l to 2.286l to match the petrol engine. Although the change in diesel option was the only significant change, the Series II was renumbered as IIA. The first 12-seat station wagon was introduced in 1962. Twelve adults would have been a tight squeeze, but it allowed the vehicle to be classed as a bus and avoid purchase tax. The cheaper price hit sales of the more expensive 10-seat 107" station wagon in the UK market, and the 107" was finally dropped from the product range. 1-ton" Land Rover. Externally, this looked identical to the standard Series IIA 109" ( "3/4 ton" ) Land Rover, but was upgraded in a number of areas to handle heavier loads and towing. The most notable upgrade was the use of heavy duty transmission components from the Forward Control models. Overall gear ratios were also lowered to aid with towing. As with the Series I a decade earlier, by the late 1960s it was clear that significant changes were required if Land Rover was to keep its edge. Hence in 1971, the Series IIA was replaced by the Series III.

Who knows what鈥檚 about to fail? There may be cracked hoses, leaking AC lines, or even a corroded and failing battery. The time we open the hood for work may well be the only time anyone looks at those things until they fail. As much as people hate to spend money, it鈥檚 easier and cheaper to change a battery when your car is already in the shop than it will be when it dies, in an empty parking lot, some cold winter night. That idea exemplifies the difference in our philosophy. We believe in identifying what may go wrong tomorrow, and fixing it while we do today's repair. Other people believe is doing just what the schedule says, and no more. There's a place for both ways of thinking; I believe our philosophy is more suited to long term ownership. We apply this same preventative care approach to every car we service. Sometimes it can surprise people. They go to the Shop A and hear about two problems. They come to us and we show them ten more things. That doesn't make the first guy wrong - it just means we have a different approach and I like to think we are more through.
