The Full Size Range Rover (the L322) is bigger and plusher, but also significantly more expensive. And the Sport has the advantage of being a newer design, and somewhat more nimble. It takes good maintenance to get to that point but the Rovers we've cared for right along to that mileage seem to have plenty of life left in them. The Terrain Response system made its debut in these models and it provides impressive off-road and bad-road traction. We have not seen any significant service issues with terrain response; indeed most of the gadgets on these trucks have proven trouble free. The only disappointment is that there is not a thriving off-road community building around these trucks, as developed around the original Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender. These are fully worthy vehicles. John is a longtime technical consultant to the Land Rover clubs, and he鈥檚 owned and restored many fine Rovers. Reading this article will make you smarter, especially when it comes to car stuff. So it's good for you. But don't take that too far - printing and eating it will probably make you sick.
The new Evoque sports a revised honeycomb grille bookended by thinner LED headlights that reach back into the front fenders. The tailgate is wider thanks to two-piece taillights that don't intrude far into the hatchback's cutout. Like the outgoing model, the 2020 Evoque features turbo-4 engines, a 9-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive. Base models are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes 246 horsepower鈥攁 9 hp bump from the outgoing version鈥攚hile uprated versions use Range Rover's first mild-hybrid system that provides 296 hp from a turbo-4 and a 48-volt system. Range Rover didn't say if the system can drive the Evoque on electricity alone for short distances but said the 48-volt system can cut power at 11 mph or slower to save fuel. The Evoque sports the next generation of an all-wheel-drive system it helped pioneer. The Active Driveline system that's optional on most Evoques, but standard on top P300 versions, can shuttle power between front and rear wheels, simulate torque vectoring, and virtually "lock" the rear wheels on loose surfaces like sand.
However, the newer cars use tiny actuators hidden in the top. They are smaller, so the hydraulic pressure needed for a given actuation force rises. Because the hydraulics are hidden, they are often at a mechanical disadvantage (leverage in reverse) and need to push harder to move the top. The result: hydraulic pressures on a 2001 Bentley convertible top can run almost 10 times as high as the pressures on a 1987 Bentley convertible top. With that factoid in mind, it should not surprise you that the newer tops are not as reliable. In addition, the newer tops use automatic latches instead of human power to pull it shut and locked. Those latches are not as rugged as they should be. Look at a Bentley Azure and then look at an SL500. What do you see? The Bentley top is significantly larger. That multiplies the forces on every component and it鈥檚 one more reason a reliable Mercedes design didn鈥檛 work out the same on the RR/B. The next problem probably started in Crewe鈥檚 engineering department, though I doubt they would admit it.
Britain's biggest car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) could be sold to French car group PSA imminently after racking up losses of 拢3.4billion between October and December, according to leaked papers. The Tata Motors owned firm has been a target of PSA, owner of Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall, for several months. It is believed a 'post-sale integration document', which outlines the benefits of the two companies joining forces, is already in circulation and the firms are exploring the detail of cost savings after a tie-up. Indian company Tata Motors denied the report, which cited sources referring to an internal 'post-sale integration document', describing cost savings. Leaked information suggests a sale of struggling Jaguar Land Rover to French car group PSA could be imminent. As a matter of policy, we do not comment on media speculation, but we can confirm there is no truth to these rumours,' said a spokesperson for the Indian carmaker, which owns 100 percent of JLR. Jaguar Land Rover has been struggling in recent months, making redundancies across its business and cutting back production at its plants.
We've driven Outbacks before here at TireKicker, but never off-road, so it was good to finally get a sense of what Subaru's long-running crossover can do. All-wheel drive is part of Subaru's brand going back 40 years or more, and they are wildly popular in places where it snows anywhere from a little to a lot. But they're a very capable machine for mild off-road adventuring as well. Our test vehicle was an Outback XT and that bumps the engine down in size but up in power from a 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder to a turbocharged 2.4-liter four. It's a big difference. The 2.5 makes 182 horsepower. Ours was also the Onyx Edition, which is only available on the Outback XT and adds unique interior and exterior features plus dual-mode X-MODE, a software program meant to increase traction and control under the most extreme conditions. Being the more rugged and outdoorsy of the trim levels, the Onyx Edition eliminates the leather seating you'll find in other Outback XTs for a rugged and more easily cleaned vinyl. Driver's seat memory and a heated steering wheel are also deleted in the Onyx Edition. 1,845 to the price. 37.750. And that's a reasonable price for a machine that can be an economical family hauler during the week and a more capable than you might expect off-road adventurer on the weekend.
