One site has been explored before. Starting in 2004, the Mars exploration rover Spirit explored Gusev Crater and Columbia Hills, where the rover discovered evidence of past water, the only place it found water in the enormous crater. Later data analysis suggested that the crater may have once hosted a shallow lake. The Jezero Crater is an ancient lakebed where microbial life could have developed, NASA officials said in a statement. The river delta structure suggests that water filled and drained from the site at least twice, and MRO has identified minerals that have been chemically altered by water. An ancient volcano in Northeast Syrtis could have led to hot springs and melting ice, creating the ideal conditions for past microbial life. The edge of the Syrtis Major volcanoes exposes 4-billion-year-old bedrock, as well as many minerals altered by the encounter during the Red Planet's early history. The final selection of the landing site should come during a workshop in either 2018 or 2019, the researchers said during a 2015 meeting.
It was well past time to put this situation to rights. This is a long story, and has been a major theme of this blog over the years. Aimee and I never have compatible work schedules, and there isn't any kind of public transportation or car pool facility available to us, so we both need our own vehicles to get to work. Aimee gets a reliable car, which in recent years was our lucky Camry. For many years now I've managed to get by using a series of end-of-life junkers, first a succession of Saabs, then the Mazda, and eventually the old Ford Escort wagon. There's also a need for four-wheel drive vehicles in winter, and for vehicles to do farm work. Our venerable 1971 Land Rover is my winter truck, does a lot of the farm work around here, and will last the rest of my life if I take care of it.
Living legend former Jaguar test driver and works racer Norman Dewis receives an OBE in Her Majesty鈥檚 New Year Honours List. Norman Dewis OBE developed no less than 25 significant Jaguar cars and is widely regarded as Britain鈥檚 greatest test driver. At 94 years old, Dewis is one of the last living links to the golden era of the British motor Industry; those post-World War II years when Jaguar rebuilt itself into a champion sports car maker. During his 33 year career, Dewis completed more than a million test miles at an average speed of 100 mph-plus and survived high-speed crashes in the days before seatbelts, without ever breaking a single bone. He also played a vital role in developing the revolutionary Dunlop disc brake. During 2014, Dewis spearheaded Jaguar鈥檚 60th anniversary celebrations for the race-winning D-type. Wherever Jaguar was during the year, Norman was present too, chatting with fans and friends, wearing his distinctive bootlace tie and cowboy boots. At the 2014 Goodwood Revival, Dewis drove one of the D-types, his speed illustrating that he hadn鈥檛 lost his touch behind the wheel. Of all the cars he worked on, Dewis considers the D-type to be the best. 鈥淚 got that car up to 192 mph on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans,鈥?he says. Dewis is working with Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations鈥?newly established Jaguar Heritage Business organisation to help showcase its capabilities and vision. John Edwards, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, and Chairman of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, said: 鈥淛aguar owes a huge debt to Norman Dewis. His incredible skills have resulted in some of the finest cars this company has ever made - whether they were designed for the road or the racing circuit. The Norman Dewis of today is the same quietly confident and modest man of the 1950s - he remains a world-class Jaguar ambassador.
