THE ULTIMATE CAR GUIDE

THE ULTIMATE CAR GUIDE

Those who had the money to splurge get three engine options to configure their X5's. These are a M54B30 2,979cc I6 and N62B48 4,799cc V8 that needs to be fed with gasoline fuel, and a M57TUD30 2,993cc I6 diesel burner. The gasoline I6 (inline six, not configured in a "v" type) purrs well and responses to the driver's foot; the same thing goes with the diesel I6, but boy it drives fast and can handle the weight of the car. The V8 is a beast to drive, ferocious, fast, and yet functional. Pick your engine choice wisely. With its 3-Series under chassis, it drives similarly to its sedan counterpart. Steering is definitely loyal, giving excellent feedback and weighing. Try to drive it on a corner (or just plain cornering) and you'll feel some degree of under steer, but this is not a huge problem. Even at high speeds, the ride is well composed and you won't feel any time to stop for some vomit break (a testament to the beefy suspension) and stays true to its on-road mission. If you plan to bring it up to the mountains or ford it on floods, you've read the wrong choice dude. The advent of car based SUV's (or crossovers as what automotive journalists would mention) had every automobile manufacturer have one in their line up and every customer or motorist line up at the dealerships to have their hands on one. The BMW X5, age notwithstanding, is a perfect companion when accomplishing duties inside the city. And now, you can have one for the equivalent price of a brand new mid-size SUV or a high end crossover. Just set some funds for maintaining one, since BMW maintenance are not for the lazy ones.

The outer column didn't need any length changes but now I needed a lower inner column support. RTC324) to support the Series 3 splined shaft now residing at the bottom. It took a bit to find one online and they are expensive! The thing I found out though was the OD(outside diameter) of the bearing was smaller than the ID of the outer column. Crap can't anything be easy? My solution was to use a piece of stainless steel strapping and cut it lengthwise so the bearing was a tight fit. Next up was to figure out how to secure the bottom of the outer column so the whole thing wouldn't move around. I started out trying to make a simple L shaped bracket to bolt to the bulkhead support and the flange on the bottom of the column. In the process of doing this I realized that I wanted to shield the lower bearing from debris with a rubber seal. I went ahead and drilled out an old piece of axle bump stop mount from my Rangie that the bumper had fallen off of. I replaced the bump stop after the Christmas trip.

It pulls strongly in spite of the X7鈥檚 frankly absurd 2.4-tonne kerbweight, matched perfectly by the familiar eight-speed ZF box. But the X7鈥檚 aspirations as a Range Rover killer mean this BMW needs to be as comfortable and complete in the rear, as it is up front. Gladly, there鈥檚 loads of room in the back; all UK cars get seven seats as standard, but for an extra 拢500-odd you can 鈥榰pgrade鈥?to a six-seat layout with two armchair-style seats in the middle row. These slide and recline electrically, of course. Four-zone climate control is standard, and you can even spec a five-zone set-up if you plan on regularly carrying a full suite of siblings. A Land Rover Discovery is perhaps marginally more spacious for those in the very back, but the X7 should prove more than sufficient for growing kids. You can specify rear sun blinds in the second row, and there are even controls to allow passengers to close the headliner. But the biggest difference with the X7 versus a Discovery, is bootspace.

Hence the German automaker Sports Activity Vehicle phrase to underline its dynamic attributes over the rather utilitarian construction of many traditional SUVs. Seven years after its 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show debut, the all-new X5 mission will be to reconfirm, once again, its premium status with a new list of firsts for its category. The Bavarian carmaker describes it new X5 as the worlds first SAV (OK, we'll read it as crossover SUV) to be offered with Head-up Display, an active suspension system - BMWs adaptive drive package, active steering and run-flat tyres. And the new BMW X5 is powered by the latest, most advanced engines. A choice of three units will offered at launch, two petrol and one diesel, all of which feature increased power compared to the engines in the outgoing model, while also posting more economical consumption figures and reduced emissions. In the UK, the biggest seller is expected to be a 2,993cc six-cylinder diesel but, for those preferring petrol power, the X5 can also be specified with a 2,996cc six-cylinder or a 4,799cc V8 engine.
