Jaguar Land Rover Timing Chain Lawsuit Says Engines Fail

Jaguar Land Rover Timing Chain Lawsuit Says Engines Fail

The plaintiff claims there is a contact point between the piston-rail that causes a wear point in the tensioning rail that causes outward movement of the tensioner piston, as well as chain slack and the chain rattle heard by drivers. The plaintiff says in addition to the cost and hassle of timing chain failures, there is a serious safety issue to deal with when a vehicle loses power steering and power brakes while driving. The lawsuit also alleges that while the timing chains fail, the owner's manuals for the vehicles say nothing about inspecting the timing chains or performing maintenance on the chain assemblies because timing chains should last at least 150,000 miles. In place of timing chains that last 150,000 miles, the lawsuit alleges the affected vehicles are equipped with chains that fail at less than 50 percent of their expected lifespans. Plaintiff Schmidt alleges his vehicle started having problems at 80,000 miles, even though the timing chain was supposed to be "maintenance-free" for life.

The British SUV wins against the Mercedes-Benz G-Class as well. The German hauler has only 16 cubic feet behind the second row, less than half of the Defender鈥檚 capacity. Fold the seats and it increases to 69 cubic feet. That鈥檚 not bad, but it鈥檚 almost 10 cubic feet less than the Defender. As far as materials go, the base model comes with Resolve textile upholstery. Upgrade to the S or SE trims and you get grained leather combined with robust textile surfaces made from Decitex fibers and recycled polyester. These materials pay tribute to the canvas hoods fitted to early Land Rover Series models that preceded the Defender. Move up the trim ladder to the HSE and you鈥檒l be wrapped in higher grade Windsor leather. Finally, the Defender X combines the same leather with Steelcut Premium textile accents for enhanced durability. This textile is a 30 percent wool blend and is also available as an alternative to the leather upholstery paired with Miko suede cloth.

I want to try something new out. I'm not just a one dimensional person with only Land Rovers as my life. I also like to ride bikes, road and mountain. And I went on a ride yesterday, so I hope to tell the tale today. Loading up my bike and gear in the 109 then driving down to Santa Cruz, Calif I parked in front of the old Wrigley's building(yes of the gum fame) that is now home to Santa Cruz bikes. It was very quiet on the Thanksgiving Holiday morn as I geared up and headed N. on Mission Street. My loose plan was to ride over to Wilder Ranch State Park and then climb to the top by 1 of many possible ways. As I passed the horse corrals I finally decided that I would go up the west side of Englemann's loop and then climb up Wild Boar Trail. Once there I wasn't sure which way I would go. The coast around here is composed of sedimentary layers laid down in a series of marine terraces. It has been lifted and exposed by tectonic plate interaction.

Update: March 2015 - Rumors are buzzing again about Ford putting a 3.0L V6 diesel in the F-150. Ram (Dodge) has introduced a V6 diesel in their light duty pickup called EcoDiesel and it's getting a lot of attention. Update: June 2010 - The sweet 4.4L V8 diesel engine that was rumored to go in the F-150 is going into a Land Rover! You heard that right. The 4.4L V8 diesel engine that is a Ford engine, produced in the Ford Chihuahua engine plant in Mexico, will not make it to the American market in the forseeable future. It is destined for Europe, and not in any Ford products. Better luck next time Diesel F150 fans! I suppose it may make it to the F-150 some day, but for now we're not optimistic. Update: January 2010 - Well it's not official but it seems that the idea of putting a diesel engine in the F-150 is dead. It doesn't help that the high gas prices seen in 2008 have gone away and gas is relatively cheap still.
