Land Rover Defender
The British Army's Land Rovers have been the subject of criticism following recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. There have been many rumours about a replacement vehicle type. In recent years Land Rover has occasionally produced special editions of the Defender. These have usually been little more than a vehicle being fitted with certain option packs and equipment, although more bespoke editions have been produced. Mostly they have been aimed at the more lucrative "lifestyle" market than the Defender's usual commercial and off-road markets. In 1992 the first special edition Land Rover Defender was produced. Called the 90SV (SV stands for "special vehicles", as all the vehicles were produced by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations department), they were painted turquoise and were fitted with a black canvas soft top with standard door tops. Alloy wheels were also fitted, together with rear disc brakes (a first for a Land Rover). Despite the vehicle's sporty looks, it used the standard 200Tdi turbodiesel engine. Only 90 were made for the UK market. For Land Rover's 50th anniversary in 1998 two special editions were built.
Most instances will put the car into restricted performance mode but not always. This is most common on the 3.6 TDV8, to check, inspect the two hoses that run from the top of the intercooler into the engine a split will show if you squeeze them. We would always advise to change both hoses even if only one is faulty as the other will fail shortly after. A common problem on the Range Rover L322 is perished rear hub bushes. These are the bushes that connect the hubs to the wishbones and the usual symptoms are clonking noises from the rear suspension when driving over bumps. The bushes are quite difficult to replace, requiring LR special tools and a fair amount of elbow grease. Full Size Range Rovers are very heavy on brake pads and discs which can need replacing every 30000 miles. Electrical faults ranging from engine not starting as easy as usual or not at all to dash lights flickering etc can be caused by a faulty alternator particularly on the 3.6 TDV8 models.
Seven people can jump in to this stylish MPV but the interior may be plain looking for some people. The three rows, depending on the usage, can be cramped or spacious. Control layout is a mixed bag, some are good while some are not and the bonus heads-up display is a help. With the local Peugeot distributor pushing with diesels, the 5008 has two oil burners throughout selling life. Lower models sold from 2013 to 2015 have a 1.6 diesel which gets 112hp at 3,600rpm and 285Nm at 1,700rpm paired to a semi-automatic transmission. Higher end models gain a 2.0 diesel utilizing 163hp at 3,750rpm and 340Nm at 2,000rpm that is matched to a conventional automatic. The semi-automatics could be a complicated combo but you would get used to it later on when you get the hang of it while the automatics are a fine partner. Both engines are fine but we suggest to get the lesser one since it will give you a slight advantage on fuel consumption. Another great feature is this model gets a unique diesel particulate filter which removes harmful particles for zero emissions and a start-stop system. If you want something that is fun to drive yet without sacrificing practicality, this is it. It steers with confidence, has less body roll, and offers an accurate steering. However, the suspension setup will give you a firm ride. It seemed the current Peugeot distributor got the right product when it was first made available and priced accordingly. Later models were messed up since the top end is retained with a jacked up price, but at second hand prices this is a steal already.
An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the Green Car of the Year program each year, a reflection of the auto industry's expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Finalists are selected for their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance. Availability to the mass market is a factor to ensure honored models have the potential to make a real difference in environmental impact, and finalists must be available for sale by January 1st of the award year. Audi's 2014 A6 TDI blends excellent "green" credentials with unexpected levels of performance in a high efficiency vehicle. Its 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine with tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive provides 240 horsepower and 428 lb-ft torque, achieving 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. A start-stop system aids efficiency, as does a lightweight body that makes extensive use of aluminum body panels.
