Land Rover LR2
I admit to not having followed all of Land Rovers' developments and so did not know the freelander was similarly crippled. Even without low range the freelander is an amazing performer off road. You aren't going to do much rock crawling with it but it doesn't have the ground clearance for rock crawling anyway. Its too bad the freelander sucked at everything else. Check out the Freelander thread on edmunds. It just might be the least reliable modern vehicle ever made in the west. However, I thought the Freelander was designed by McGovern, who is (or was) a Ford designer who ran Lincolns' design studio for a year or two and did basically nothing but a concept or two. The freelander went on sale in Europe back in 1996 and was in development back in the early 1990s. Ford didn't have anything to do with it but Rover Group, Honda and BMW did.
Looks like it might be time to reorder the compact sedan Big Test we did in 2016 when the Corolla鈥攖he oldest entry in the field, even back then鈥攑laced 6th in the seven-car field. The landscape has changed since then: The Civic has gotten some of its mojo back; Mazda3 is launching with AWD and a much higher pricepoint while dropping its multilink rear suspension for a less-expensive torsion beam. A new Jetta is coming but the styling is less than inspiring. Hyundai and Kia have added dollops of styling and performance. Meanwhile, Ford had dropped the Focus for the U.S., and GM is discontinuing the Chevy Cruze. To those Detroit execs who voted to walk away from cars because SUVs are so hot, 鈥淲e鈥檙e staying bullish on sedans and small cars,鈥?says Ed Laukes, group vice president of Toyota Division marketing. After all, Americans bought 1.8 million compact cars last year, and Toyota is happy to take a bigger slice of that pie. Toyota makes no apologies for the entry-level nature of this car. It is not trying to be premium or powerful.

Justin Birchall won his first BCCC event of the season after a very challenging event at Forrest Estate in South West Scotland. Martin Gould, winner of the opening two rounds, led early on but his Buxton 4x4 Rivet succumbed to engine problems on the fourth run which handed the lead to Birchall. Despite a blown diff and some punctures Birchall built a lead of 1m 31s over the eight runs of day one with Adrian Marfell in second in his Fouquet Nissan. There were a further seven runs on day two and Birchall continued to head the leaderboard, his winning margin ending at 1m 40s. Marfell claimed his best BCCC result to date with second. 鈥淚鈥檓 very pleased with the result, it was a really tough weekend which was hard on the cars and crews,鈥?said Birchall. Lee Mansfield and Ryan Cooke had an event-long battle in their respective Milners with Mansfield eventually taking third and Cooke fourth. Both crews had their share of issues over the weekend with Mansfield surviving a high-speed brush with the scenery and Cooke suffering major clutch problems. Another pair of drivers enjoying a close fight were Rob Bool and Mark Jacques, Bool bringing his ex-championship winning car home in fifth ahead of Jacques in sixth. Britpart's Paul Myers was seventh, just 20 seconds ahead of the JRG Clio V8 of Steve Smith. Mike Moran set some quick times in his Lofthouse Evo but problems with the car on day one resulted a maximum which dropped him down the leaderboard. Richard Coleby completed the top ten in his Polaris. In the BCC Trophy Paul Rowlands took his Can-Am DS to victory ahead of the Insanity Racing Tornado of Jon Damrel. Pat Masters repeated his round one win in the Freelander Challenge ahead of Team Sheepie's Ian Linford. Ian Morson was third. 2016 BCC Trophy champion Phill Bayliss returned to the BCCC in style with a win in the Clubman category.
