New And Used Land Rover Range Rover: Prices, Photos, Reviews, Specs

The long-wheelbase Range Rover has even greater presence than the standard-length model and appears simply huge in person. Changes for 2015 included expanded availability of the long-wheelbase model with HSE trim and the supercharged V-6 engine. Land Rover also made more features standard on the lower models and created a well-rounded Driver Assistance package that includes all of its advanced safety and convenience tech, including automated parallel and perpendicular parking with parking-exit assist. In addition, Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations unit produced in 2015 a very exclusive model to top the Range range. The Holland & Holland edition played off the luxury gunmaker's brand and offered what was effectively the most luxurious rolling gun cabinet extant. A bespoke interior, special green paint, and gun lockers in the cargo area assured the most comfortable of hunting outings. 285,000, making this the most expensive Range Rover model ever built. For 2017, Land Rover offers a Range Rover with a diesel engine that was new last year. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine makes 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque.

It feels more substantial, and sits more upright, and gas mileage is improved, though still not a breakout in the class. It provides more back-seat space than the Japanese crossovers, and its cargo space is above the mean for the class, but there's no third-row seat--that's the province of the bigger LR4. Despite its more traditional role in the Land Rover family, the LR2 reeks of its upscale heritage. It's not nearly as quick as the latest BMW X3 nor as efficient, and it's probably just as off-road-capable than the Benz GLK, not more so. But like those two utes and above all the other contenders, there's some real upper crust in the LR2's folded fenders and in its green-and-silver badge. There's no hardcore, off-road-ready two-speed transfer case, but the rugged-looking LR2 lives up to a lot of the macho promise baked into its crisply folded sheetmetal. While the Range Rover lineup of utes veers off into a styling ether all its own, the LR2 stands by the formal design and all-out SUV cues of the past. In its niche, it's a good thing: the LR2 still reads "sport-ute," something that can be said of the Mercedes GLK, but not nearly as much of the competition from Audi, BMW, or Cadillac. Trail riders won't admire the lack of a true low range, but the LR2's traction systems are quite sophisticated, and let casual off-pavement drivers choose the right traction mode for the conditions at hand. In our experience, it's more than sufficient for the way these utes are used, anyway.

While synthetic oil technology has produced lubricants that should last ten years or more, that does not mean I feel comfortable leaving them in a car that long. Few manual gearboxes, power steering systems, and differentials have filters. That means any contaminants that get into the oil keep making their way through the system. If dirt gets in, or pieces of metal invade the oil, disaster is ensured with those long change intervals. Another big risk is water intrusion. Differentials in particular are susceptible to water intrusion. I鈥檝e seen several Mercedes 4Matic transfer cases that were ruined by watery lubricant as well. For those reasons I suggest checking these fluids every 3 years-30,000 miles or wherever there is a visual suggestion of a problem. Automatic transmissions are a different matter, because they have filters. However, they also put different stresses on their fluid, and having seen what gets drained out at 120,000 miles, I feel most ATF fluids should be done by 60k miles. 5,000 repair if it blows up on your watch.
