Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE P400e: The High-riding Hybrid

Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE P400e: The High-riding Hybrid

When it does, it slowly drains its 13.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack to maximize efficiency, unless you switch to Hold mode to save the juice for a special, silent occasion. Even then, it will call the electric motor into service when you floor the accelerator and need a burst of full power. The opposite occurs if it鈥檚 locked in electric mode, which it can be for up to 31 miles, according to Range Rover. 7,087 federal tax credit, putting a bit of space between it and the all-electric Tesla Model X SUV. 0 at the end of the year. More to the point, the hybrid Sport is about two grand less than the conventional six-cylinder version in the HSE trim. You can do both of those things with some authority in it, which really can鈥檛 be said of the Tesla or any of the other plug-in hybrid luxury SUVs out there, including those from Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

Currently, though, shoppers have the choice of two V8 engines, the aforementioned base V8 and what our test vehicle was equipped with, a supercharged version with 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. That's plenty of power, since Land Rover has managed to remove all that weight. Dividends are paid in the form of 0-60 runs of 5.1 seconds - a 0.8-second improvement. Fuel economy is also improved to 13/19/15 (city, highway and combined). Our lead feet led to a week-long tally of just 13.9 miles per gallon, though that did include a few extended stints at idle with the air conditioningon. If nothing else, the V6 engine may help lower the price of what is undeniably an expensive vehicle. 83,545, and it only goes up from there. 150,000 after adding a few more bits of decadence. The Range Rover, though, has somehow always managed to feel worth its high-dollar sticker price. The accommodations couldn't be nicer, and the 2013 model is the kind of vehicle that can quite literally take you anywhere you may want to go. But the same thing could be said of the last generation of Landie's off-roader. So, the question remains: Did they "make it better"? In the end, they did.

During the record attempt to beat England鈥檚 puny 384, Craig Dutton and his team obliterated this record by assembling an unconfirmed 1007 Land Rovers! What a great effort and it shows the spirit of LR, that only the most single-minded, uni-brained individual would not be impressed. But for me, not being a Land Rover owner, meant that I needed a disguise. So I slipped into an Evoque. It鈥檚 a lovely car, and I say car, because to call it a vehicle might suggest it could be used for any other purpose than to be comfortable in the city traffic and entertained whether moving or not. But one thing that the Evoque does, in my view, better than any in recent years, is to look good. This is a very beautiful car, and is unusual in that no matter from what angle it鈥檚 viewed, it鈥檚 gorgeous. Inside is no different. It welcomes you; the seats are sporty but not too much so, and the driving position is a clever mix of sports recline and upright SUV. I had it for almost a week and at first was stunned by its feel and performance, but that feeling faded a bit. Superb steering feel is unlike any SUV except maybe the Forester, but the mixture of turbo-lag and the auto box meant that I concluded that if I was to buy one, no ways would I consider the diesel. And why the one-piece tail-gate? Split tailgates are far more practical and that鈥檚 why Range Rovers have always had them鈥?until now. But my week鈥檚 highlight was the Land Rover festival.

Jaguar Land Rover has announced the launch of justDrive, an industry-leading app technology that integrates multiple smartphone apps into a single, voice-activated in-car experience. Developed by Silicon Valley-based CloudCar, Jaguar Land Rover has optimized justDrive for its InControl platform for both Apple iOS8 and Android phones. Drive will join 17 other apps including Stitcher, IheartRadio and Parkopedia currently in Jaguar Land Rover鈥檚 InControl Apps in-car infotainment system. Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said: 鈥淥ur InControl system already allows the driver to plug their smartphone into the vehicle and then safely control their apps through the vehicle鈥檚 touchscreen. The apps areenhanced for in-car use, so it is exactly like having your smartphone installed in your dashboard. 鈥淭oday, we areadvancing our InControl system a stage further and to the forefront of the industry with the launch of justDrive. Drive uses one of the most advanced plain speech recognition packages in the world, so customers can communicate naturally with their car, rather than using simple syntax commands.
