First things first, find a name for the beast: how 'Thorpe Carr' came about. Remember what I said about finding a name for a layout that would be apt for the area or region represented by your layout? In the case of this little layout, I thought I'd set the scene in a fictitious location near the Yorkshire Wolds. There's also 'kirk', or church, that features in countless place names. That's got one part of the name fixed. Again many villages have double names. A physical landscape feature might come in handy. The small layout I did for my son involved the word 'rigg', dialect for ridge. So I settled on the name 'Thorpe Carr' for the station, coal and goods depot that would serve a farming community and its local area. The theme harks back to an era when the railway still fulfilled a social function in providing a means to get to market towns (Helmsley, Malton and Pickering were the market centres in Ryedale - Kirkbymoorside to a lesser degree).

The Range Rover to end all Range Rovers cometh. T.Fotiadis Design, a company based in Berlin, Germany that normally crafts luxury yachts and high-end residential interiors, has plans for a Range Rover 6x6 pickup truck dubbed the SLT. But where a similar vehicle like Mercedes-AMG's G63 6x6 is all about performance, T.Fotiadis' SLT not only maximizes capability but also ushers in ultra-posh motoring. The vehicle also has a specific purpose. It's envisioned as a tender for superyachts where it could be used to transport the yacht's owner and guests (plus all their luggage) from the dock to an airport or hotel or to private residences. Fotiadis tells us the vehicle's initials stand for Superyacht Land Tender. The company says the vehicle also features inspiration from its luxury yacht designs. Yacht-like are its proportions, indeed. The SLT is based on the Range Rover Long-Wheelbase and measures 244 inches long, 84 inches wide, and sits 73 inches tall. Details on its off-road gear are slim, but T.Fotiadis said the vehicle features three axles, six 20-inch wheels, and a custom body kit. Powering the mammoth 6x6 will be the choice of a 2.0-liter inline-4 married to a plug-in hybrid system, a 4.4-liter diesel V-8, or a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8鈥攁ll standard powertrain units offered on the Ranger Rover in Europe. On the luxury front, T.Fotiadis plans to outfit the interior of the SLT with liquid metal and resin, porcelain, crystal. A set of exclusive seats will come from Foglizzo and owners will be able to customize all interior motifs and colors. Other niceties will include a wine chiller, airline-style and power-operated folding tables, onboard Wi-Fi, and LCD touchscreens in the rear. Development of the SLT is ongoing but the vehicle should be ready (fittingly) for a debut at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show in September. The order books will open in the next three months.

And to top it off, there is a terrain response system that allows the driver to select from the following four settings to maximize traction and control: General (for normal driving conditions), Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, and Sand. The LR2 comes standard with a 3.2 Liter inline 6 cylinder engine that produces 230 hp and 234 lb-ft torque. This gutsy engine has plenty of grunt, especially at low rpm鈥檚, but starts to feel winded as the tachometer climbs. The LR2 is no lightweight at 4250 lbs. 9 second 0-60 time confirms. A few more ponies under the hood wouldn鈥檛 hurt, but for most driving situations the engine is more than adequate. Taking care of shifting duties is an Aisin-Warner 6 speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with CommandShift manual control and sport mode. Like the engine, this transmission does its job with little fuss. Although the sport mode didn鈥檛 seem to make much of a difference over the normal setting, the manual shift option proved handy for controlling speed when driving up and down slippery steep roads.
