The Tdi could not meet Euro III emissions regulations, bound to be introduced in 1999, so in 1998 the Defender was fitted with an all-new 2.5-litre, five-cylinder in-line turbodiesel engine, badged the Td5. This replaced the Tdi as the only available power unit. The engine used electronic control systems to provide 11 horsepower more than the Tdi, and much improved refinement. Traditionalists were critical of the electronic systems deployed throughout the vehicle, fearing that these would fail when used in extreme conditions. Another new vehicle is the Defender 110 Double Cab, featuring a station wagon style seating area, with an open pick up back. Although prototypes had been built in the series days, it was not until the late 1990s that this popular and adaptable vehicle got into production.

In preparing for the Peace Corps, naturally I tried my best to do as much research about the experience and envisioned what it would be like to be a Volunteer. I vividly remember story after story of Volunteer鈥檚 describing being dumped off at site and iconically watching the Peace Corps white land rover pull out of the village with a sense of overwhelming dread. Looking back, while sitting in the comforts of Starbucks or Barnes & Nobles, I remember thinking that there is no way this is that bad and that if in the situation, I would be exceedingly ecstatic. Yep, I speculated wrong鈥gain. As the Peace Corps car pulled out of Moyamba, I stood there awkwardly thinking crap, I am overwhelmed (yet, ecstatic), have small ache in my stomach for the security of my fellow PCV friends and the staff and now what? The journey to site was nothing short of interesting. After taking the oath, giving a thank you speech in Krio and spending our last night in Bo, we departed for our respected villages scattered throughout the Salone countryside. Once again, I packed up my African life and jammed it all into the Peace Corps land rover.

November 4, 2013 - The Land Rover LR2 compact luxury SUV offers the brand's renowned off-road capability in a vehicle that provides outstanding on-road ride comfort and agility. The Land Rover LR2 deftly blends performance and efficiency. Its 2-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine delivers 240hp and 250 lb.-ft. CommandShift automatic transmission. This transmission is coupled to a full-time four-wheel drive system featuring a HaldexTM rear axle coupling. The powertrain components and systems are protected from water intrusion, providing the vehicle with a 19.7-inch water wading depth3. Standard amenities in the LR2 include grained leather seating with an eight-way power driver's seat and six-way power front passenger seat, along with a dual-panel panoramic sunroof. A turbocharged, direct injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine debuted in the Land Rover LR2 for 2013, offering more power and torque than the 3.2-liter inline-six it replaced while consuming less fuel. This engine delivers 240hp at 5500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft.

Parking in London isn't easy with a hulking great spare wheel under your nose! One of my daughters bought me a wide angle rear-view mirror to clip over the original one inside, cutting down the 'blind spots'. I had to get another 'Landie'! The wife was fed up with my Series III anyway. Draughty, let in water over some of the windows and a bone-shaker! I had to wait for the insurance to 'cough up', which didn't take too long. 拢4,000 minus the 拢100 excess. Still, I had a 拢2,000 roof job to pay for, so that left 拢1,900 'to play with'! After consulting the people at Grawall Autos (Graham and Harry) I knew I couldn't get a lot for my cash. Another one like it - preferably better - would go the same way, as they are easily dismantled. So I opted for a Discovery. After a few jobs on it, and another couple of less urgent ones, she runs well. Next month (June 2012) I put her to the test, back up north again (Dales, Moors and Coast, kith and kin).
