The Land Rover Defender is a British four wheel drive off-road utility vehicle. While perhaps best associated with expeditions, Defenders are also used variously in agriculture, industry and the military. The Defender name was not adopted until 1990 as a measure to distinguish the utility Land Rover model from the Discovery and Range Rover. In the United States and Canada, North American Specification (NAS) Defenders sold between 1989 and 1997 said only 'Land Rover' with no '90' or '110' numeric designation.
