One feature that is sure to raise eyebrows is the independent rear suspension clearly visible in photos of the prototypes. Independent suspensions are lighter and offer improved ride quality and fuel economy over traditional solid axles. The original Defender used rough and durable solid axles that contributed to its legendary off-road capability. When it comes to all-terrain climbing in style, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the reigning champion with exceptional off-road angles and three locking differentials. One step down are the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Defender鈥檚 own Range Rover sibling, though both models are large for serious off-roading. Finally, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is an affordable and ultracapable SUV for hitting the trails. Where will the 2020 Defender be built? According to reports, the 2020 Defender will be built at Jaguar Land Rover鈥檚 new plant in Nitra, Slovakia.

The most potent powertrains will allegedly be found in P400 and P400e grades. The P400 features a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 while the P400e features a plug-in hybrid setup pairing a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with an electric motor. In both cases you're looking at more than 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. A battery-electric powertrain is also a possibility at some point. Production of the redesigned Defender won't take place in the U.K. Instead, it will be handled at a plant in Nitra, Slovakia. The plant is a modern facility that only became operational in late 2018 when it started building Land Rover's Discovery. Land Rover will reveal the new Defender in September. 67,745 Range Rover Sport.
