The 16 Most Important Debuts At The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show
Hyundai 45 EV concept. Hyundai 45 EV: This retro-futuristic battery-electric vehicle draws inspiration from one of the very first cars the Korean company shipped west, the 1970s-era Pony. But the look is more angular 聳 and updated with, among other things, distinctively pixelated rear end lighting. While the Hyundai 45 concept may take inspiration from the past, the company bills it as a 聯symbolic milestone for Hyundais future EV design.聰 Well have to wait until next week to learn more about the prototypes drivetrain technology. Hyundai Electric Race Car: The Korean carmaker has been making a big push into motorsports lately and should gain plenty of attention with the little racer it has been teasing in recent weeks. It isnt revealing much beyond the big rear wing and the Hyundai Motorsport and N logos. One of the key questions is how the racer is powered? Though developed in Germany, theres some speculation it may benefit from Hyundais ties to Croatian battery supercar company Rimac. Also to be announced is what series the new racer will participate in.
So the Freelander 2 mixes strong geometric shapes and flowing, car-like softness. The fast-angled windscreen, the raised roof and the tapering rear pillar all reflect the car鈥檚 dynamic, sporty on-road abilities, as does the smooth shoulder line. Also contributing significantly to the flow of the design are the body-coloured A- and D-pillars, while the black E-pillars at the rear give a graphic which resembles the floating roof of Range Rover. The body sides on Freelander 2 are sharp and chiselled. But in the plan view, the surfaces are smooth, sheer and one-directional. The surfacing is also taut and very defined, to give the vehicle a lean, muscled look. The grille is a strong and confident design statement (with different versions for petrol and diesel models). The rear is also cleaner, significantly helped by relocating the external spare wheel of the original Freelander underneath the cargo area floor, and by the new one-piece tail-lamps. The whole design is simple, much less cluttered than before, more premium and more desirable. We wanted a minimal number of components that interlock to form a meaningful and attractive whole, says Geoff Upex. The headlamps and tail-lamps, for instance, are watch-like in their detailing.
A year later, the Range Rover received the RAC Dewar Award for outstanding technical innovations and the same year 750,000 units of the Land Rover were manufactured. By 1975, British Leyland fell into financial debt and was taken under state control to prevent it from bankruptcy. Finally, in 1978, the assets were separated and Land Rover Limited was created, which meant that for the first time the company was under independent management. In 1981, the 4-Door Range Rover was released and production exceeded 1 million. In 1985, Land Rover Ninety made its debut with automatic gearbox improvements. In 1987, Land Rover Limited decided to launch its Range Rover vehicles in the US, thus the Range Rover of North America was formed. In 1988, Land Rover celebrates its 40th anniversary and it was marked by total sales of 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, which was a huge accomplishment for the company. In 1990, the company celebrated 20 years of Range Rover production and the Defender was soon introduced.
The gearbox operates via two levers inside the cockpit鈥攐ne for selecting high and low range, and another for selecting the gear. Opening the door on the back of the truck and folding the rear seat forward gives you a close look at some of its trick gearbox components once the truck is built. You will want to show that off, of course, provided your house-guests haven't already start fiddling with it as soon as they saw it. If your miniature Landie falls into a really bad place between the sofa and a steep pile of throw pillows, never fear鈥擫ego included a working winch on the front bumper, too. In addition to the trick gearbox, the new Lego Defender comes with independent suspension, front wheels you can steer with the steering wheel or from a wheel on the roof, and even an inline-six under the hood with moving cylinders. You can tell this was based on a nicely optioned Defender, too, as the roof rack, storage boxes and winch all come in the new model's Adventure Pack, Top Gear notes. Like the real 2020 Defender, this one should be coming to America soon. 199.99 on October 1 on Lego's website or at your local Land Rover dealership.
A recurrent plea in the planetary community has been for the re-use of common spacecraft, i.e., don't keep re-inventing the wheel. It is heartening to see that NASA seems to have accepted this idea, at least for now. Earlier this year, NASA chose the InSight Mars geophysics mission that will re-use the Phoenix lander design. A lot of effort went into transforming the Mars 2001 Lander into a robust, well-tested soft lander. That system is now ready to host Discovery-class payloads. Several ideas were presented at the Mars Concepts Workshop in June. The Phoenix spacecraft bus is a low-cost means of getting to Mars' surface and we may see it used several times in the coming decades. MSL-2 not only will benefit from existing designs and testing but also from a supply of flight ready spares built for MSL-1, Curiosity. This week, NASA chose to fly what is essentially MSL-2.
